I took German at school and, a few years later, spent 10 weeks in Germany and Austria. They all say various forms of kriegen, zbw, hingekriegt, mitgekriegt, usw. I never learned this in the German class. It should have been the first thing we learned. Proper German says " Hast du Das verstanden ? Did you understand ? But they all say Hast du Das mitgekriegt. I eventually figured out that it is like saying Did you get that ? instead of Did you understand that ?

Oh I realized I couldn't really grasp it when I was seeing these videos. But after doing a lot of Duolingo now these phrases instantly stick with me.

Just like how you did latin origins to learn Spanish you gotta get a handle on the similar sounding words. It starts to make sense intuitively.
