The oilers had the best defense in the AFC under Jim Eddy and they probably would have reached the super bowl eventually. Hiring Ryan was a mistake but after the disaster in Buffalo and with Dallas winning the super bowl in 1992 the Ryan hiring was the only thing that brought the fans back. Wilbur Marshall was not needed, they already had two great outside linebackers with Eddie Robinson and Lamar Lathon.

1993 was the wet dream of Oilers fans whom wanted the road to the SB to go through the dome. 1978 and 79 losses in the AFC title game were tough but those teams were thick as thieves under Bud. 1980 was supposed to be the year but an upset loss to the Jets relegated the Oilers to WC status and a first round loss to the Raiders. Then came decline, collapse and rebirth. 6 straight years in the playoffs and only 3 playoff wins. A bitter loss in 1989 to the Steelers in OT that got Jerry Glanville fired, a 15 point lead in Denver blown in 1991 and most incredibly, a 32 point lead in Buffalo blown in 1992. Add Buddy Ryan to the mix on an older team with lots of guys in contract years. Warren Moon didn’t have one of his better years in 1993 but Gary Brown did, one of the forgotten very good running backs in NFL history. The defense was very good, albeit on a mostly soft schedule. They went from 1-4 to 12-4 and got home field advantage throughout the playoffs but laid an egg vs KC in a bitter defeat. One and done, an abysmal failure

My Dad is a diehard Houston sports fan and has been since the 1960s when he was a kid and I'm genuinely not sure if he hates anyone more than he hates Bud Adams. He took his beloved Oilers from him and he despises him for it. I wasn't around for the oilers but I understand his hate. And all Houston feels the same

Buddy Ryan is the definition of the coach you have to simultaneously respect and hate.

He was a Defensive Genius who literally helped to redefine the game and could make your average Defense look like one of the best in the league.

On the other hand he was an arrogant, egotistical prick who did not know how to shut the hell up. His comments and remarks did nothing but damage team’s reputations and destroy morale.

Warren Moon was not a dual threat QB. He was a prototypical pocket passer. His career high in rushing yards was 268 and most seasons he was well below 200 yards with zero designed rushes. Cam Newton is about the dumbest comp I can think of. Maybe watch some film or look at some stats. Having watched Moon play I knew this was dead wrong and confirming it took less than 30 seconds. This is inexcusably lazy. If I had to guess how such a dumb assertion made it into the video my guess would be that you figured a black QB had to be a good runner ala Stephen A's similarly brain dead take on Dwayne Haskins.
