I was born and raised on Baltic & Bond - just down the block from the "Boutique Hotel" she mentions. One block from the Gowanus Canal, and I can't even describe the deep, slimy green sludge that they call water. The smell during half the year - mostly late Spring and Summer. My mother, 3 sisters, uncle and his wife, all died from cancer. All between the ages of mid 40's to late 50's - no one made it past 60, mostly Leukemia and lung, organ cancers. Everyone was in good to very good health at time of diagnosis. Gentrifiers and Hipsters maybe have an immunity, who knows. The Gowanus Canal was definitely the common denominator for my family though.
