Clear Channel and Viacom monopolized the radio to control rap and leave it at the state that it's in. If natural progression was allowed, we would all know today's greats of the underground like MF DOOM, Living Legends, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Immortal Technique and many more... Other wack careers that are prominent now in the mainstream would be in jeopardy.....The corporations gave us slime so we as people don't have the voices we needed to move our society in a positive way....

I love rap music. But I won't lie most rap music is angry. It also promotes the idea that hustling in the street getting yours at any and all cost. Now too a mature adult we can see that this is just art. Music is just a expression. However when we see our youth who are not quite mentally ready recieve this music . So this blueprint in those lyrics let's the young teens recieve this blueprint as something to do. Instead of it just being a song.

Hell no, us who grew up on groups like the boogie boys , fat boys, us girls, utfo etc know this isnt true. The violence was already there but the 80s powder AND crack brought the violence to the community and the people out there had NO idea what it would do to the community later.... Absolutely still see the effects today

In the days of slavery and Jim Crow black people proudly fought to assert their humanity, self worth and autonomy. However, Hip-Hop has successfully dismantled the progress our ancestors made by leading black people to accept themselves as n*ggas and b**ches. The very identities our oppressors designed for black people 😢😢😢

Yeah, something to think about. A 14-year-old kid listening to vibrations where the verse, chorus, and crescendo is "Immo kill a niggah tonight". Or you see a 5-year-old twerking to the same vibrations. Hmmm. Music can be a problem, in the aggregate, combined with a lack of education, lack of resources, culture, not being able to participate in governmental programs that others benefited from for decades, and laws. In a tornado, the cow pummeling you is not the only thing that can kill you.

You seem to be a well-articulated, educated Black man. And I agree with your point that Rap isn't the cause of black on black violence. But, it doesn't help. I am White. My only real exposure to "hip hop" growing up was Sugarhill Gang, the Fat Boys, etc. "Friendly Hip Hop". Once "gangsta rap" started, it was a nightmare to be White in my neighborhood. I grew up in a neighborhood that was 70% Black. The amount of sensless violence and murder that I saw as a teenager in the 90's was ASTOUNDING. Even recently, I had a co-worker, who was a 20 year old Black kid. I trained him on how to do his job. Seemed like a good kid, on the job, but we later discovered he wanted to be a "rapper". He had tracks about carrying guns, doing drugs, killing White people, etc. So, he was fired. I guess my point is that he seeeemed like a nice kid, but the 'culture/music' corrupted him.

then lets stop having violent movies and rail against that

and violent video games
when America talks about violence they always wanna point to black people who are disproportionately poor in our community but never any other communities with issues because i guess we're "the problem child" of America.

We want change but don't want to change anything. So nothing will change.

Rap music, like all types of music, influences the masses believe it or not. Listening, primarily, to music that talks about criminal activity and violence all day, it only makes sense crime is continuing to rise in the community.

Rap isn't the only problem, but ot absolutely is a big part of it. I bet if these young guys grew up on Jazz or classical, the chances of them turning into thugs would be much lower.

If you chart how quickly we innovated genres of music before Hip Hop you can see we invented at a 5 to 10 year clip. How did we get stuck on 1 genre for 50 years?. It's the money from other groups of people that keep this psyop artificially resuscitated.

I agree that most of hip hop is very explicit. I am originally from the Bay Area. Hip hop is very popular in the Bay Area. Also, if it wasn't for hip hop, many rappers would still be selling drugs or living criminal lifestyles and being railroaded to prisons. I have a former classmate whose father is a legendary rapper from San Francisco. I found out who her father was when we were juniors in high school. If her dad wasn't a rapper, he'd probably still be selling drugs, dead, or in jail. Even though he was a gangsta rapper, it gave him an outlet to talk about his life as a Black man from San Francisco. I have listened to many of his songs, he is talented.

The Bloods are a primarily African-American street gang founded in Los Angeles, California. The gang is widely known for its rivalry with the Crips. It is identified by the red color worn by its members and by particular gang symbols, including distinctive hand signs.

The Bloods comprise various subgroups known as "sets", among which significant differences exist, such as colors, clothing, operations, and political ideas that may be in open conflict with each other. The Bloods have expanded throughout the United States.

History
The Bloods gang was formed initially to compete against the influence of the Crips in Los Angeles. The rivalry originated in the late 1960s when Raymond Washington and other Crips attacked Sylvester Scott and Benson Owens, two students at Centennial High School in Compton, California. As a result, Scott formed the Piru Street Boys, the first "Bloods" gang. Owens subsequently established the West Piru gang. The Bloods was initially formed to provide members protection from the Crips. Many of the non-Crip gangs used to call one another "blood". On March 21, 1972, shortly after a concert featuring Wilson Pickett and Curtis Mayfield, 20 youths belonging to the Crips attacked and robbed Robert Ballou Jr. outside the Hollywood Palladium. Ballou was beaten to death after refusing to give up his leather jacket. The sensational media coverage of the crime and the continued assaults by the Crips increased their notoriety. Several non-Crips gangs formed during this period were no match for the Crips and became concerned with the escalating Crip attacks. The Pirus, Black P. Stones, Athens Park Boys and other gangs not aligned with the Crips often clashed with them. On June 5, 1972, three months after Ballou's murder, Fredrick "Lil Country" Garret was murdered by a Westside Crip. This marked the first Crips murder against another gang member and motivated non-Crip gangs to align with each other. The Brims struck back on August 4, 1972, by murdering Thomas Ellis, an original Westside Crip. By late 1972, the Pirus held a meeting in their neighborhood to discuss growing Crip pressure and intimidation. Several gangs that felt victimized by the Crips joined the Pirus to create a new federation of non-Crips neighborhoods. This alliance became the Bloods. The Pirus are therefore considered the founders of the Bloods.

By 1978, there were 15 Blood sets. Crips still outnumbered Bloods 3 to 1. To assert their power, the Bloods became increasingly violent. During the 1980s, Bloods began distributing crack cocaine in Los Angeles. Blood membership soon rose dramatically as did the number of states in which they were present. These increases were primarily driven by profits from crack cocaine distribution. The huge profits allowed members to relocate to other cities and states.

knowing the history of the Crips and the Bloods may help identify, investigate, and understand gang behaviors. In the mid-1950's, African-American neighborhood youth groups were developing in South Central Los Angeles. These were active social organizations involved with house parties, car clubs, school dances, and getting together at particular roller skating locations. Rivalries developed among groups, and smaller neighborhoods started to band together for protection. Gang activity flourished and declined during various periods in the late 1950's and 1960's. In 1968 the first groups appeared that later became known as the Crips. To protect themselves from the Crips, the other Los Angeles-based African-American street gangs banded together. This group became known as the Blood gangs, completing the polarization of West Coast African-American street gangs, who are no longer social organizations, but are involved in violent and illegal activities. The Crips and the Bloods are rivals to this day.

The young brother was downright eloquent with his misinformed soliloquy!. he said using Nigga efectionately among ourselves  takes the negativity out of the word!,  but that no other race of people can use it ever but us! and you thought that kind of reasoning existed only in the Twilight Zone!. then again that was a TV show!. and the plight of Black America  is a tragic reality!. somebody said the Revolution would not be televised!. They didn't say anything about our Devolution! which is well-Documented!. you see it every day In our disrespect for one another!. you can hear it in our sad excuse For artistry!. as we continue to Squander our Brilliant cultural Legacy as Musicians! Poets! Educators! and Inventers!. we call Our women Bitches! and Whores!. We refer to ourselves as Niggas! in our quest for acceptance! and our Relentless worship of bling! is our sense of dignity and self-worth!. it Didn' tused to be this way!. Ironically back when we fought for The opportunities we now abuse!. That is when we stood tallest!. out of our Torturous struggle for equality! morphed a mighty Pride and honor!. but now our pride is Built on hollow motives and Aimless ambitions!. today to identify our oppressor the black American need look into a mirror!. But high praise for low thinking Has taken it's toll on generations!. When so many are lost!. there is Enough blame to go around!. when Martin Luther king Jr Prophesied the black man one day Reaching the promised land!. he Said I might not get there with you!. lord knows he didn't Visualize we would end up here!.

An excellent post. In the 70s and 80s there were so many fab class funk & soul acts . All can be seen on soultrain. They made African Americans feel good , feel proud look cool and know about love and family. A traditional family was the name of the game. Now we,ve got gangsta rap that makes African Americans think about and promote ,death murder jail proud criminals drugs prostitution guns violence . Traditional families are frowned upon. Its all so ugly . The music media want to tell the world ,gangsta rap music = African Americans. If you see one, run a mile. Well I always think for everything good theirs something bad eg God & the devil. That good will always win in the end.

We’re going to end this nonsense debate whether rap music is responsible for what’s happening in the community or abroad. I say definitely not. Reason being is because the community was already ravaged from violence and drugs through movies. Such as Scarface, Miami Vice, Super Fly, Shaft, Black Caesar etc. those movies kicked it off. Majority of people wanted to emulate the characters from those movies. So we gonna go ahead and x the rap music scenario from the question of whether or not rap was the root cause for the destruction of the community because it’s not

Desegregation made it a "problem." A problem of contagion, not of violence.
This is why the White Citizens Council roughed up poor, harmless Nat King Cole during one of his shows.
To give the devil his due, though, if they could look at Nat King Cole warbling "Stardust" and see a trajectory that led to beefing crews shooting up a hotel lobby, that's intuition at the highest level.
