Firstly, this documentary should’ve been done by a music historian who’s familiar with the genre and culture. Netflix might still have its hip hop series up.. not sure.

Secondly, it wasn’t a mistake that he didn’t get the info right regarding AA’s and the creation of hip hop and Rap as the world knows it.

Even in the sports world, they have AA tokens trying to destroy
Athletes and their place in history.

The US, media etc., has always tried to deny or mitigate anything positive about the AA experience in the US.
They only accentuate the negative for AA’s.
Hollywood is good for that one.. as well as cable news.

So many Patents, inventions and intellectual property was stolen from AA’s. This includes everything from Medicine to Music.
Can you believe that the NBA wants the world to believe that a white man created the game of basketball?? 😂 All of these great AA NBA players have to accept an award based on a lie.

It’s amazing to me that once Rap went mainstream, it only took 20 years before it outsold all other genres combined!

When I travel the US and the world, you see people wanting to walk, talk, dance and dress in the style of the AA. I saw the same thing from Japan to the Mideast. Once while on a flight from Kuwait to the States, once the pilot mentioned that we were in International airspace, off came the
Local dress to reveal typical hip hop dress
underneath. Btw, the liquor started pouring too! 😊

Breakdancing and rap is world wide. I remember when every time AA’s started something, everyone else laughed, joked and talked smack.. especially with beat boxing. Eventually, white people and everyone jumps in and then it seems to become accepted and cool lol. Hollywood then finds away to market it. How many “Step Up” movies did they make?? Oh, and Breakdancing is slated to be in the next Olympics! I wonder what took them so long?? 🤔
.. and no one cared about sneakers more than AA’s. That’s a worldwide phenomenon as well. Not too mention all of the sub-genres of Rap that AA’s created; West Coast Rap, Southern Rap, “Chopped and Screwed”, Christian Rap, Horror Rap, etc.

You had many other dances that went far and wide, the Running man, the moon walk, kris kross “ jump jump”, the sprinkler, Poppin n Lock’n, B-boy’n, the worm, kid n play dance,
The robot, the cabbage patch, the Prep, the Wop, the snake, the biz, Roger Rabbit, Doin the butt, the Pendulum, the Alf and more.

Remember how they laughed about the big gold rope chains lol.

The AA is the most imitated, yet most hated. Unlike many others, I’ve always seen this as a Crown of a special people.

Having said that, we are all special people in own right, and we all make contributions to the whole. We all bring our own special ingredients to create a
Masterpiece!

Who doesn’t like the food, music and dancing etc from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and so many other indigenous cultures! And when the Olympics come around, the entire world holds its breath to see if an AA or a Jamaican will win the 100m gold! This goes for the men and women! Who couldn’t wait to see Rosie Perez in the Soul Train Line?!?

When cultures meet, they inevitably rub off on each other. If you have an open mind and an open heart, you can enjoy any culture you come across.

Whenever I’d travel to Kuwait, I had an Arab friend who was always my driver. He didn’t speak English and I speak little Arabic; it didn’t matter as we got along exceptionally well and became good friends. He had an old Mercedes and we’d ride around town doing errands with the windows down blasting Egyptian uptempo Arab music and having a blast! I could hear the hip hop in the beats!

Old school classic rock, country.. especially some Johnny Cash, I’m all in.

It’s said we live many lives and I believe that, but the life being lived is most important. Don’t let artificial man made barriers, peer pressure and manipulation stop you from enjoying the sounds of this life!

They keep bringing us this kool herc lie,if kool herc created hip hop:why did he have to come to the states to do it? Its obvious when he came to the states he copied what was already here and then added his concept. Hip Hop was in the states before herc got here. They tried to do the same with rock & Roll, where they tried to contribute it to Elvis or some other white boy, the same with jazz.Further more Hip Hip grow out of rap and rap consisted of mostly vocalization of rhymes and may be accompanied by a bongo beat.Where was kool herc?

The earliest origins of hip hop/rap started with Pigmeat Markham back in the '40s. Kool Herc didn't start hip hop.

america's last truly great musical genre and yes another one made by black americans- it really is crazy how many musical genres black americans invented and it really is a tragedy how many they have walked away from..... (blues, jazz etc....)

Herc had nothing to do with the creation of Hip Hop but the lie continues to be told. DJ s play music they don't create it. He copied what other DJ s were doing. Disco King Mario DJ Pete Jones. Hed took everything from African American / ADOS/ FBA/ Freedmen. Those who descend from Enslaved Black Americans.

AA needs to remember that long before they were free from bondage and segregation, the Blacks from the Caribbean were free, ei, Haiti.

It’s long known that Jamaica is a powerhouse at sharing their creativity and influence and have made up a lot of things that has influenced the world.
Musical genre conceived in Jamaica includes; 1.mento, 2.ska, 3.rock steady, 4.reggae, 5. dub and 6.dancehall. And that’s all documented genres of music from one island, other places like Barbados and Trinidad invented calypso and soca.

There are a couple things that nobody can deny Jamaicans; them being creative, and them sharing their culture by bringing it where they go and to share and build off what they know as their culture. I’ll translate some things that are baked into Jamaican culture:
MC/Rapper= DJ/ Lyricist
Block party= Dance (or called “A Dance’)
Stereo= sound system (jumbo boxes of speaker usually stacked 6 feet high)
Rap battle= sound clash( it’s a little different, but it’s like a verses but with MC and they LOVE to talk on that mic to set up the track)
I only wished half the people in these comments would actually visit or get more knowledge on black cultures in the Caribbean before writing ignorant comments that’s based on their perception of reality (according to their borough, or hood)
I promise you it will all make sense, once you especially get the history of Jamaica culture in the 50s and their migration to the US and so many other places, and how their background influenced what they brought and how it evolved
