Im just wondering, that they left it like this for 35 years. What did they think, that it will disappeare by itself. In the meantime, how many tons of rain has fallen and flowed through it to the ground. But its also a question of money. Who payed for the new containment... we did. It costs about 1,2 billions dollar, without the workers and maintainance on-site. So the money will flow for the next 20 years for sure. Maybe a good opportunity for a new job.

A really interesting and insightful documentary about the disaster, the sarcophagus, the victims (now and the ), and the desperate search for the remaining nuclear fuel is BBC’s “Inside Chernobyl’s Sarcophagus”. I wonder if a copy of it can be found these days, though.

Everyone in my life is sick of my Chernobyl hyper fixation but mfs this is the most interesting shit I’ve seen and learned about in my whole life, like there are worst things to want to learn about 😭
