It appears that the battlecruisers were not as vulnerable as tradition leads us to believe....... So all the blame for Jutland's explosions must be squarely laid at Beatty's door, namely, the turret flash doors.......
Ответитьwould you review the destroyer Oriani of the Regia Marina?
ОтветитьHMS Tiger being a one off Battlecruiser? I beg to differ Drach. I mean, she did have a class of step sisters serving in the Imperial Japanese Navy
ОтветитьWhy was so much clout made by all these countries regarding the size of the main guns? 350 shots fired and only 3 hits! This is obviously very poor but from what ive heard the average and best wasnt much better between all the main countries, accuracy was the main problem, hitting a moving object while your moving from anything between 5 and 15 miles is very difficult and would still be very difficult today if it was just a normal shell, they obviously never found the answer to this so in the end it just became a game of who can get the biggest gun and who has the most luck at hitting something, i dont know the answer either but i would have really liked to see something like a destroyer which was capable of hitting 40 knots and say 1- 10/12 inch gun facing forward and lightly armoured, it could speed in at 40 knots firing a 12inch shell in a horezontal angle, it would be a very small target face on and be too fast for any large guns to hit it, any hits would be very very lucky and luck is all they had anyway, im sure they could have got real close and landed alot more hits, and being so close a 12inch hit would be very deadly even to the best armoured battleships, now imagine 10 of those rushing you!! They would have been very cheap to build, very small crews and could have been built in the 100's, im suprised no country tried this tactic, instead they all got caught up in who could build the biggest with the biggest guns, when they should have been thinking about trying to make something that could get into a better position to land as many hits as possible! IMO that is.
ОтветитьEnjoyed this video, always like info on BC especially Tiger. I did want to mention a couple of things. First the RN retaining Tiger to be upgraded violated the Washington Treaty of 1922. There were only two ways to keep the ship 1. the loss of one of the R class or QE class. 2. do what the Japanese did. Convert her to a training ship by reducing guns and engines, which in fact was useful if the plan (like the Japanese)was to modernize and return to service. The main reason to keep Tiger for modernization was to have another fast ship to deal with the German Panzershiffs. In fact, in basic numbers, Tiger compares very well to the French Dunkerque and Strasbourg. But a super-duper rebuilt is not needed since capital ship construction can start in 1937, with anticipated completion dates of 1941. You are entirely correct in that Tiger would be challenged by the Scharnhorsts so send her off to the Mediterranean. Better armed and faster than the Italian rebuilt battleships, Tiger may have made Cape Matapan a total VICTORY. Regarding ammo you are way off. The RN had a large store of 13.5 shells (and guns and complete turrets) since Iron Duke served as a Gunnery training ship. Also the RN did not uniformly have 15" guns on their battleships.. Rodney and Nelson had 16" guns and the new KGVs would have 14". So there is quite a mix. Additionally, when Richelieu came over to the allied side and its distinct 15" shells. the US manufactured new 15" shells for the Richelieu. QED. Yes, it could have been a fast carrier escort in the Pacific provided it was refurbished with new AA guns (which was often done in the US for RN ships. However, I tend to think it would have been lent to the Soviets like Royal Sov. A number of older ships were laid up due to manpower shortages. Don't mean to sound negative as I did enjoy your presentation and hope you do more.
ОтветитьShe wasn't great at her job, but she sure worked hard at it.
ОтветитьCan't be impaired by turrets being knocked out if you don't hit anything in the first place.
ОтветитьI wonder if the Tiger could have been retained and refitted with the 14 inch guns of the KG5 class Battleships? It is a pity that it couldn't have been retained rather than all the
very slow R class Battleships which were obsolete and not likely to be updated.
Could Tiger have been refitted with the 15” mk.1?
Ответитьspent 4 years in united states navy on aircraft carrier really enjoy your presentation on defferent ships thank you.
ОтветитьCould Tiger have been re-gunned with the 14 inch guns used on the KGV class once those came in to existence if she had been kept?
Ответить"...even by Beatty's standards..." lol More seriously, how does someone THIS incompentent rise to such a high place? Sir John Keegan talked about "follow senior officers' motions" as a key component of the cultural problems.
ОтветитьHMS Tigger, she a bouncy, bouncy fun, fun, fun girl. ^~^ Far more than any silly old Pooh... >~<
ОтветитьTiger, tiger. Burning bright.
ОтветитьThat ship had nice lines and it took a beating so you have to give it credit. I would of liked to have been there when the opposing fleets both limped into port. What a smack down that was at Jutland.
ОтветитьGiven that the Sopwith Camel is shown with wheels not floats, how was it to be recovered?
ОтветитьDefinitely one of the best-looking warships to ever sail the seas.
ОтветитьLet's be honest; at Jutland Tiger's abysmal gunnery wasn't upped by hitting Seydlitz. Seydlitz had a magnetic attraction to naval cannon shells, EVERYONE hit Seydlitz.
ОтветитьMaybe she was kept until the full extent of the details of the Washington Treaty were known. If no new construction was permitted until the 40s this ship and others could have been stop gap ships. Really could she could have been refitted per Renown, scrap a slow ponderous, though powerful R class ship and stick 3 15 inch gun turrets on the Tiger and you have a poor mans Renown capable of at least 27 knots. Would have performed well in the Med against Conte di Cavour class ships..
ОтветитьIt’s all very well but what about the souls on board you got to think about the crew
ОтветитьFisher dream ship:
100,000 tons
8 x 18 inch guns - all in single turrets
50 knots speed
'splinter-protection only' armor
☮
Good evening,
Talking about the refit, may I suggest that they scrap one of the r’ class and use the canons + turret’s for the tiger as the speed was a huge improvement over the r’class. Maybe instead of sending PoW send repulse and the refitted tiger. Just spinning wheels here.
Ever notice how every catastrophy waiting to happen was always in Adm Beatty's orbit?
Guy was a shit magnet.
Tiger might have been the most beautiful warship in the world.....after Hood :)
Ответитьin the late 20s did anybody consider a carrier conversion of Tiger?
ОтветитьWould love to see a video of US Battleship USS Washington. She served in both Atlantic and Pacific theaters and was involved in the only (I think) Battleship Vs Battleship in the Guadalcanal campaign. I think she won and saved USS North Carolina in that battle. Thanks for your consideration.
Ответитьin essence, the battlecruiser subtracted one turret and some armour, added about 100 ft of hull length an 2x+ shp for extra kt
ОтветитьWhilst keeping HMS Tiger can seem appealing, to make it "worthwhile" IMHO you'd have to give it a full reconstruction like Warspite, Renown, Queen Elizabeth or Valiant. However time & money constraints would surely mean that giving Tiger said reconstruction results in one of Warspite, Renown, Queen Elizabeth or Valiant not getting the reconstruction that they got in our timeline? Alternatively if you can somehow find the time & money for the RN so that Tiger gets a reconstruction without losing one of those, wouldn't a better use for that time & money be to give either Repulse or Hood a reconstruction instead?
ОтветитьAre you on Rumble?
ОтветитьBattlecruisers are so cool
ОтветитьSound name please
ОтветитьA very dear friend (sadly deceased) who worked at Woolwich Arsenal for many years told me that in one week they had to manufacture 5 different calibre shells from start. That includes the forging of the blanks ready for machining. I very much doubt a run of say 2000 shells for Tiger would even have gone noticed. One would also think that ANY ship that could take that much punishment and having a reasonable performance worth saving. It would not be the first or last time 'bigwigs' dropped a right clanger. I really wish I could write here what the 'ladies' who machined shells did to new entrants, but nobody dared interfere. Let's just say those young boys grew up. No permanent damage done.
ОтветитьBeast, both irl and at least on WoWs 😂
ОтветитьWhy weren't all ships built like this one.
ОтветитьThanks drach
ОтветитьNice job as always 😊
ОтветитьMy great granduncle charles parsons was killed in action upon the hms tiger in may 1916 at the battle of jutland and was buried at sea,
lest we forget
„aircraft notification system „😂
ОтветитьAircraft notification systems. Cheers.
ОтветитьLove the title HMS Tiger (1913) not exploding. But on the other hand her gunnery left a little bit to be desired.
Ответитьfavorite boat frfr
ОтветитьThey kept Revenge class ships and scrapped this. Talk about not learning the lesson of Jutland (IE anything under 25 knots is irrelevant to the decision of a major fleet battle)
ОтветитьIt would have been hilarious if the British kept her and transferred her to the pacific theater in ww2 and dressed her up as a Kongo class and went raiding
ОтветитьVery nice video by you once again. I like your humor, especially „poor trained even for Beatty‘s standards“.
Looking at the content I agree, if „UK‘s being on low cash“, is fixed. But let’s say, they got their economy better on after WWI. I think a refit of the amor as the Kongos got, new oil fired boilers and, if possible, a refit of the guns to the forthcoming 14“ of the KGV-class would have made her capable of the most tasks in WWII, except fighting Bismarcks, Littorios and Nagatos, not to mention Yamatos. Therefore one of the R-class battleships should have been put into reserve with arms in warehouse as the Japanese did with one of the Kongos, while Centurion must have been scrapped, to hit the London naval treaty. This would have allowed Hood to be undergo the major refit in 1939, which might have lead to another outcome of the battle at the Denmark strait. Force Z would still have been made of PoW and Repulse, because the admiralty wanted have quit modern vessels in the far east.
The hilarious fact that not exploding is the main trait of a particular british battlecruiser
ОтветитьI hav e read the the updates of the Kongo class would have been a reason for updating the Tiger.
ОтветитьPinned post for Q&A :)
