So yeah it’s debatable wether the shark was trying to either get him out so she could chew on him or just swallow whole but the scuba tank and remaining diving gear made that impossible either way and each time her mouth opened you can see FitzRoyce wanting to make a desperate attempt to climb out and each time the jaws closed he was squished.
Once his mouth piece came out was when he attempted to go for the grenade and each time he tried to pull the pin the jaws came down and he was squished more.

(In reality it was a scene played out where they make the pretend to struggle to make a grab for something)

In the end he was squished too much in the chewing motion of her mouth insides and his dead body is left caught in her throat with the grenade still in hand and blood from him and the shark emits out as she keeps trying to chew and swallow. Shark’s blood is from being damaged from the diving gear and scuba tank.
Wether or not FitzRoyce was still alive even at this point he was drowning and squished too much to be able to keep his breath.
It’s a meal the shark would never be able to enjoy had she lived well beyond the events of the film as his body may also block other victims from being swallowed until FitzRoyce’s body is eventually swallowed or decomposed. That would leave her one hungry shark.
She made no effort to eat the nephew just crush her jaws down onto him and chuck the body aside.

I remember seeing this scene as a kid on VHS, and I remember it made me nauseous from watching how this poor guy was not going to make it and then his death to boot. Even today, the scene is still gripping and one of the best horror scenes of any horror film (sorry, Jason, Freddy, and Michael).

This is clearly an R-rated movie that got incorrectly rated PG. Even in 1983 (one year before the PG-13 came to be), this is far too gory to be rated anything less than R. And, this isn't even the goriest moment in Jaws 3. That "honor" goes to an extremely sickening scene.

SPOILER ALERT!!

When they find the corpse of the first victim (Shelby Overman), his body is truly sickening to look at. Even Mike Brody reacts predictably to the sight of it. It's truly terrible that I can't even describe it here without feeling sick to my stomach. PG, my ass! This is truly an R-rated movie, as I said above.

here is what is going on in this, the water pressure is pump millions of gallons of water each second, that rope is the only way to get to the top which he was trying to do. When the rope broke, he is unable to swim to the top. The water pressure pushed him to the mouth of the shark, and got stuck in behind the mouth area of the shark. So the shark is trying to get him out of the area, just like we humans bite too much and food get stuck in our throat.

I remember in the old cartoon, Extreme Ghost Busters, there are ghosts disguised as clowns that eat a lot of people throughout the episode. Whoever laughs are literally pulled out of their clothes and are eaten whole. Most of it is offscreen, but one of the main characters is eaten onscreen and we see his legs being pulled from his clothes into the clowns mouth, finishing off with a burp.

Boy, have I got a special treat for you today. Paul Campion, the director of Eel Girl, who claims to be more of a vorarephobe than a vorarephile, cites this scene as what made him fear the idea of getting eaten. You could therefore say that this indirectly inspired Eel Girl.
