Writing down ATC instructions - Pilot's Shorthand

Great iniciative ! Controlers speach while chawing gum with potatoes, allways desperate go to the bathroom , its a total disrespect with safety. The problem became worst with crew trying to understand not native languages . The history of aviation is full of accidents caused for bad comunication. What are we wainting for ?

Is it appropriate to take notes during PPL training? Like for taxiing instructions?

Your speech pattern is very fast as most younger pilots these days. I have a difficult time understanding fast talk. Any times I have to ask for a repeat of instruction from controlers. This does not help save time but extends time to repeat instructions.
The whole idea of talking on the radio is to convey intensional movements and altitudes understandable to all pilots, not just the fast talkers!
This is not meant to cause trouble but to understand that all pilots are not capable of interpreting fast talk.
Give us old southern boys a break so we can safely share the same experience and wonder of flight!

When they say expect 5,000 10 minutes after take off what do they mean do they tell you to climb to that level after you reach 3,000?

We have the voice recognition technology to switch from garbled, stepped-on, often incomplete radio transmissions of varying quality to printed communications with either panel or heads-up displays in the aircraft. This would reduce misunderstandings, afford an accurate record of ATC clearances that could be readily referenced in the cockpit, and save lives.

A handy acronym to remember when getting IFR clearance is “CRAFT”
Clearance
Route
Altitude
Frequency
Transponder

i find it makes it a bit more readable when you circle waypoint. that way you can read stuff like RH = runway heading and you know (RH) is waypoint Robin Hood

Excellent video, thanks for taking the time to do this. One question popped up in your clearance section example. You use "RH" for runway heading. What do you use to abbreviate for left hand or right hand departure to not mix up Right Hand with Runway Heading?

I have a genuine question Josh - or anyone who'd help clear this doubt.

I've always been extremely clumsy with my handwriting and it usually distracts me enormously from any task I perform. I find it extremely easy and fast to write notes on my phone. My question is: is it prohibited to use your phone as a notepad instead of handwriting?

My two flight instructors have never been too bothered about me doing so, but I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong and if I am, then at least I know I'll have to get practicing a lot more.

Oh my! I have avoided IFR training because it is so intimidating. Watching these videos doesn't make it simple, but it does condition me to better understand the instruction. Radio communication with ATC is so much more complicated than I think it should be. I guess it come down to "training the ear".

Maybe do a "Legend" of your abbrev. in the top R corner. I'm in Indiana. Send ATC wording(?).

Josh, love your videos. However, I would like to make a suggestion. You speak so rapidly that it's difficult to absorb the information you're giving. For instance, I just watched this "Writing down ATC instructions" which I had to pause and backup many times in order to get what you were saying especially when there's so much static from the tower when they're giving you instructions. My husband and I owned our own plane many years ago so we are not unfamiliar with what you're doing even though much has changed since we flew. So please, slow down a llittle because we may want to get into flying again.
