I think Tommy makes sense in DE because in the 1930s, crime was very high, his life very poor. He has definitely seen a lot worse than some gangsters running away or smashing up some cars or shaking people down

Race was hard because devs used steering wheel to play it. On keyboard proper challenge. The more racing games you played on device with analog outputs the higher probability of succeeding you had in Fair Play race. 😁

Keyboard as digital device, has only on/off inputs not like third. That whats make it hard on PC, nothing else. And I was able to defeat it in original version, played too many racing games at that time. 🤣

Its unpopular to say, but the original has aged like milk in my opinion. Ive tried numerous times to do a playthrough and i simply cant get through it..

The ONLY thing I prefer is i like how innocent Tommy was initially. Oh, and I liked Paulie not being a dick to Ralph in the original. I'm sorry, by the way, but the voice acting in the original is awful. They sound bored as fuck and they're just reading lines.

Also, the prison in the DE creeped me the fuck out. I could not wait to get out of there.

I also dont really love the driving in either game. I feel like the perfect system would have been exactly how cars like the Shubert AB, Smith Coupe, and Smith V8 drove in Mafia II. That game had the best driving in any game I've ever played.

HOLY SHIT PAULIE DOES SOUND JUST LIKE SHAKE

I played Mafia 1 OG when it was free on steam for its 20th anniversary and loved it so I bought the whole trilogy. In my opinion if you can handle the jank of older games you should play the original first then move on to 2 and 3, since for me it was a big surprise when vito killed tommy and it was really cool, I also liked the lucas bertone side missions and was sad when they weren't in the remake.

As a fan of the first Mafia, the remake was a blast for me, but I don't think it's really better. I liked new graphics, characterization of Sara, some added cutscenes (like the one after a trip to the country), and the whole approach - dont fix whats not broken.
Some aspects were a bit too "modernized", the gameplay was too easy (except for the race), shooting mechanics - that i didn't like.
For a newcomer I'd strongly suggest to give og Mafia a try - with mods it does look tolerable.
And another thing - Steam version doesn't have licensed music, and it is CRUCIAL to have it in the game - so pirate it or install a music mod.

I played the Xbox port of Mafia and was spared the terrible experience PS2 players were exposed to. Mafia is one of my all time favorite video games. Good story, great music, fun missions. Its a game that has an extremely high replay value. Naturally I had to play the Definitive Edition on PS4 because I was excited to see how the timeless game would look with modern graphics. I am so happy the developers built the game from the ground up instead of simply porting the PC version and polishing the graphics. The definitive version allows you to see Mafia as what it would have looked like if it was originally made in 2020 as opposed to 2002. The 2002 game will always be my favorite simply because it is a product of simpler times. When I sold my Xbox in 2006 the only game I could not part with was Mafia. I still have it just in case I end up buying a used Xbox from ebay. Will be a blast from the past playing the actual game I fell in love with again.

A little late but if your only complaint was no borderless window mode then i have the solution. if you get the widescreen fix from thirteenag and dont tick fullscreen in the setupexe then the game will run in borderless and save the settings as settings.bin in the savegame folder instead of your registry

I understand that some people love the original mafia, but man, it definitely ain't for me. I fully played it, and evene enjoyed the first few hours, but the repetitive gameplay alongside the same 3 to 4 songs over and over throughout the whole game, soured the whole franchise for me. I really enjoyed Mafia 2 and appreciated the third game, but man, the original still gives me chills for how painful it was to beat it.

Both games are great, but I still prefer the Original, it just had something more to it. The DE expanded somethings but it took away a lot of others, like crazy mode, freeroam being also bare bones. Also DE doesn't have the same music they used in the Original which was a little of a bummer. I still think DE is a great game, but Original just more to it. But I also understand why some parts been cut if you follow the fact that Tommy is telling the story from his own perspective and he would not tell about doing jobs to get cars like in the Original. Still, I miss all the secrets and humor that Original had.

First, this was a great take on both games compared each other. It wasnt so deep comparison but still you maintained key aspects for comparison and it was well made, didnt expect such thoroughful inside. Thanks for that taking your time, I guarantee there's more to find in OG Mafia!
I'm a czech OG Mafia fan, I've finished the game countless times, so to me this game has meant alot, especially with an excelent czech voice acting. To summarize both games in few words without being overly nitpicky - Mafia remake brings more depth into some characters while maintaining the core of the original game. However, parts that could have been left untouched imo were touched, thus for me it creates both games complementing each other. Something is better in one than in another and vice versa. For a player that never played original Mafia, the remake version will certainly satisfy him. For a player that has a luxury of comparing both games, the remake comes out with solid 8/10. It's not a complete disaster of a remake, it's a well-made tribute to the fantastic 2002 MAFIA game, but with some simplified gameplay and especially with final message of the game. The visuals of outro sequence is made better in remake, but the OG message is better and realistic portray of a mob life.
P.S. I was really missing Tommy's words after he lefts Frank escape as he remembers what Frank had told him in a car: "At the end, your best friend will kill you". -> Salieri kills Frank (Tommy was supposed to kill a friend), Sam kills Paulie, Tommy kills Sam, Salieri kills Tom. No room for a friendship in this line of work.

Lol Tommy really does die without learning anything in the original. I'll have to try the original at some point but watching this it looks like the DE fixed a lot of issues with the story. I had such major whiplash after buying and playing the trilogy recently. I didn't understand how the first one could be so good and the second could be so awful. Now it seems like maybe the writing was always lacking in emotional intelligence and the remake just fixed that.

From how I see it from the characterisation for Tommy in the beginning of the DE, he is a lot more jaded since, throughout his time as a cabbie to him, was luke warm at best in his eyes with his bad treatment from his fares and only doing this to only survive not living if that makes sense, only around after the 1st mission where he realized he can be more than just a cabbie but at the time made his peace with it as stated by himself "I rather be alive and poor than rich and dead." Which makes sense why he's a lot more brutal in the DE than the original. Moreover, only until after Morello's boys crush his livelihood, he has a chance to get back at his once old life and a way to have a purpose in his life and stqrt living his life and enjoy it.

I first played the ps2 version, im easily impressed with effort at times so I didnt really care that, that port sucked big balls, but the race mission made me quit mafia for a while, but then I played it on pc and gave it another chance, still hated the race but after that the game's missions get better and made me love the mafia series since.

There are other small, nitpicky details that I feel reveal a lot about the differences in game development. For example, in the original game, the main bridge in the city is called the Giuliano Bridge (named after a Sicilian bandit), while in the remake it's named the Giuliani Bridge, after Rudy Giuliani. Seems to me like there's a lack of understanding of the essence of the original game by the new developers.

I also feel like the soundtrack/acting in the DE is quite overbearing, and I prefer the stark bleakness of the original ending. I also prefer Sam's character in the original for the reasons you stated.

All of the aspects of Paulie's character that are expanded on in the DE are present in the original. Paulie does talk somewhat briefly about his motivations for the bank robbery on the train ride over (if you engage with him). You can also tell he's annoyed at Ralph's "cripple" comment earlier in the game and does insult him back (albeit in a more lighthearted way). I prefer the subtlety of the original's writing. I also somewhat prefer not seeing Tom's family in the original (there are easy to miss lines in the game if you talk to Luigi before certain missions where he mentions them). It feels more like the game is giving Tom his privacy and choosing to focus solely on his criminal career.

Bruv, it's either me or it's the game but that aim assist even on DE version is shit as hell.
Shooting and aiming in this game is ridiculously hard, can't get past "The Lucky Bastard" mission which I heard on Classic version is much harder.

I play Mafia 2 and handling them mobsters with 1911 no issue. I ain't played both games for a long time so my shit shooting skills could be a definite issue on this one lol.
