Paul Washer the Baptist is going to tell us what it IS and isn't to be Reformed. Aha, ok.

One of the things that really disturbed me about Washer was (in addition to his cantankerous fundamentalism) his horrible relationship advice for young people. Countless testimonials of how his worldview wrecked the young years of many couples.

I became a Christian in 2016. I think this was the tail end of this movement. But so many young people I knew were into it! It’s interesting to see how they have changed. The new thing I see from young people is the hyper charismatic movement. It’s strange American Christianity has waves of fads.

What is the context? We only got a short clip. What did he say after Sola Scriptura?
To a degree, he is correct. Scripture alone is a foundational aspect of the Reformed camp. If i had to guess, he is probably critiquing those who claim to be reformed, but have stepped away from actually following said doctrine. There is nothing wrong with that critique.

Brother, would you consider yourself cessationist and provisionist (Like Leighton Flowers, and the traditional Sotoriology of Southern Baptist)? I have those stands, and are looking for cessationists that are not calvinists. Can you point me to some?

I am pretty sure he was a missionary for years in Peru, before any YRR, but i guess we can gossip about him, and talk about our preferences.

When I hear a Paul Washer sermon, many times question my salvation or I feel icky and shamed. Anyone else? Maybe this is just an abuse leftover/triggering thing, but I don’t get this from vibe from many preachers.
That did not apply to this clip Dean played of course since Paul is addressing a specific group of people.

Isn’t this the definition of gas lighting ? All the people saying “they weren’t apart of the movement “ but really were. Why why why can’t they admit they are wrong. They never will admit when they make a misstep. Like I want to tell them … FYI - we know you are sinners and fallen men. It’s okay us down here off the stage buying your books aren’t the only sinners. “Touch not Gods anointed” get these same vibes if you criticize these guys at all. Who made them King ? Had enough of “Big Eva”

I'm going to give brother Paul the benefit of doubt on this one, in part of my own ignorance as someone who became reformed after the movement died out. Its kind of strange. When you look back at a lot of the interviews and sermons from the YRR days, many of the preachers and theologians that "headed" the movement had substantial criticisms of the movement. In terms of Paul Washer specifically, I can only listen to him in small doses, but I don't know how involved he actually was vs how many people latched on to his ministry without him really being aware. I know it took awhile for the feedback from the "shocking youth message" to get back to him, but that's pretty much all I know.

Didn't Protestantism start with the Reformation? Is that not the point Paul was trying to make versus making it about the YRR movement? I may be naive and I may have rose colored glasses for Paul, but he's also never NOT been close to the Fundamentalist side of Theology.

YRR is no longer profitable as a movement, and as a result the grifters are pretending they had nothing to do with it.

Maybe I'm just a former heretic saved by grace, who doesn't have a good grasp on these things. But Paul Washer helped me understand solid biblical doctrine. I thank God for Paul W. as I listened to him constantly because I didn't know who I could trust with my mind. I found an old video of his, and I felt peace, so I kept listening.

I understand his point that many people call themselves reforme but have no idea what that even is. I do wish there was more content to your video. It really seems like it's just a guy complaining about a guy complaining.

I understand your perspective but what Ive understood to be a big thing for Paul Washer has been helping people properly understand the gospel and what it means to be a Christian. Which is why he gets so intense

Does YRR have an objective definition as a movement?

Is there an example of a Calvinistic preacher in the 2000s or 2010s who aren’t YRR ?

Washer I think was always critical of people who put too much emphasis on theological or moral exactness. Maybe he wasn’t clear enough when addressing this, but I recall him criticizing both young men who wouldn’t shut up about Calvinism and people who “dressed like puritans”. Obviously, he believed in having good theology and dressing modestly, but I think also feared people would place their hope in academic learning or in morality rather than in Christ.

I’m probably a bit more liberal than Washer, but he is a very humble and kind man in person so far as I experienced. I don’t mind his style of preaching. Whitfield and Edwards were emotional preachers. The prophets in the Bible and even our Lord probably came across as angry.

His Latin pronunciation sounds a little odd, but his wife is Hispanic, so I assume he is using Spanish pronunciation.

I mostly agree with you, and I share your thoughts about Paul. But, he always did try to separate himself from everybody in any group, even though he was invited to speak and was included, because he thought he was right about things. This is my observation from attending the events and hearing from him. Once at a G3, he used his time and Steve Lawson's time because he felt like what he had to say was more important. It was so late that I went back to our hotel and listened to Steve on the recording. It's no fun being around Holy Hal's. Part of living in this world is realizing that anything you are a part of will be imperfect and need course correction. I am reformed, but one of the things I hate about most of us is our inclination toward fighting and division.

I love how the thumbnail says "That ain't me," next to a photo of Washer smiling. I don't think I ever saw a smile on that man's face until after his near-death experience. Before that time, he looked like he wouldn't recognize the Joy of the Lord if it slapped him across the face.

I was part of the yrr movement in its tail end. I'm glad I got in and I'm glad i only did in the end. I'm still reformed but I discovered how to be rested lol. It introduced me to a lot of drama but it introduced me to a deeper knowledge of Scripture also
