I've been wanting to put either a 4.0 or 305 stroker in a 1998 Chevy Malibu rear wheel drive conversion. Maybe take a rear end out of a 98 Camaro I know I would have to fabricate that would be something different

Try the 4.0 inline 6 add that into the mix with those three instead of just two it would be a better show because the inline 6 is more torque than a V8

Chevy had to come out with a smaller V8 because some agencies would write the bid spec to favor Ford by specing "V8 engine, displacement no larger than 4.6 liters". The Caprice had a 350/5.7 so GM adapted. Ford could do anything when an agency spec'd a "V8 engine, 5.0 liters or larger".

There's a couple of guys, father and son, named Ernie Neal, running the little V8 Caprice in Super Stock. It's pretty competitive.

I have a little 4.3 Vortec V6 on the engine stand now. It has been zero decked, has hypereutectic Speed Pro 350 four valve relief flat top pistons, it's been balanced, bored and honed with deck plates, the heads have been milled, pocket ported, and have a three angle valve job, with stainless valves, screw in studs, and adjustable 1.6:1 rockers. It also has a Crane 214/222/114 hydraulic roller cam, should be over 0.500" lift. The Vortec EFI intake may hurt HP, but I figure it will make 250+ for HP, and about 300 ft/lb for torque. If I build another, it might get small dome pistons, and a little more cam. They're great little engines, and at around 250/300, run strong and get great fuel economy. Honestly, it's probably a lot better than a V8 swap for anything but all out racing.

Is the oiling system in the L99 the same as traditional small blocks from Chevrolet ? If so that is a MAJOR design plus in my opinion. 4.3 v8 for the win....

My current daily driver is a 2000 GMC Jimmy with the last generation of the original 4.3 V-6. And while it's held back by being in a luxobarge 4×4 four door SUV, it makes more than enough torque to get with the program. Power Nation built a hopped up version that made over 250 hp and almost 300 lb ft of torque naturally aspirated.

For racing more cylinders is always preferred, for hauling things less cylinders with bigger displacement works best.

I'm more into max hp without boost and less weight, less parts for 375 hp range. Would like to see what can be done with the latest version Vortec v6. What is the total cost per hp? What is the longevity comparison? What works best with added hybrid tech? The cost of petrol will likely double as more EVs hit the pavement. It's the capitalist way! Toyota's hybrid Rav4 proves point.

I always thought the 4.3l v8 would be neat to put in a 55 or 56 chevy that originally came with a 265V8. This 4.3 is the same size with an inch or two. it'd be neat when people see it to tell them it has a 265V8 (baby LT1)

From what I know small bore, short stroke V8 engines are great for turbocharging, twin turbos would be best and the V6 would be better supercharged. Great comparison video. What I don't know, can the 4.3L V6- 3/4SBC be stroked or destroked, like the SBC 383? If so, it would be be a better for turbo applications.

Given that choice, I would take the 4.3 V8 every time. I have always regarded 90 degree V6 engines as lousy compromise. The primary reason for their existence is to share manufacturing investment with an existing V8 engine family. The NVH is lousy, so it needs a balance shaft... additional complexity, cost, weight, and friction that adds nothing to performance. I like V6 engines, if they are 60 degree, inherently smooth(er) to start with.

In a wedge engine large stroke equals large torque, and large bore equal large horse power, now a 305 is the smallest bore chevy made in a small block but pushing it with boost and the small bore does not hinder the engine anymore, I hear of a guy running a 366 big block engine running in the 9's in quarter mile in a first gen Camaro, yes he could go faster for easier with a 454 or 427 but boost will overtake any air flow problems you could dream of

Don't buy a 5.3 V8 after 2018 a guy at our gym had one that had a catastrophic engine failure with 26k on it. He isn't the only one I know about. It's that stupid engine that shuts off cylinders then the cylinders not firing doesn't get lubricated properly. All he was towing was a two stall horse trailer at the time that's not much weight.

I had the chance to build a 1996 vortec v6. I don't know the flow numbers but I did do a valve job along with a boring over and port and polish. It broke two 4l60es. I used the stock intake with upgraded mpfi and a street legal tune and kept the stock camshaft. I need to find a performance dyno to get the numbers. It did do 10.01 in the eighth mile starting in second gear with a 12 inch wheelie though.
