Well, since my Spanish grew out of Duolingo, I keep my streak with learning Japanese. More or less like your experiment. I even started to learn how to read Hiragana.
There is no pressure. I literally have no goal with Japanese. However, I start to recognize some words when I listen to Japanese, or I when I see on of the letters which I have already learnt. But is way to far to understand a meaningful conversation. So, to answer your question: Yes, it might work, but it will take a lot time. And you have to adapt as soon you achieved a certain level. E.g. at some point reading or listen to a Japanese conversation might more useful as Duolingo.
I like doing these experiments. Another is learning French only with ressources in French. I stopped it a while ago, but I have an off-on relation with French. This is normal.

I heard (from someone who moved to Japan a few years ago) that Japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn for Westerners. Multiple writing systems/alphabets to start with. Kudos for trying something hard but don't forget how hard it is and feel that progress should be easy.

Ten minutes is a tall order...
I have been studying Swedish every day for an hour, and I feel that is not enough.

Japanese is not that difficult.
Both pronunciation and grammar are much easier than English.
You have to forget kanji for a moment and just focus on learning words and phrases.

As a native Spanish speaker I remember being so thrilled and excited to learn English since I can remember, then I learned Brazilian Portuguese because I wasn't brave enough to take French even though it was the language I wanted to. I kinda dreaded learning BP because it wasn't challenging enough. Then I tried German but because of absence of professors or student I didn't go further than the first course. 2019 I entered into the Kpop/Kdrama world and then to Cdramas, Netflix dubs Kdramas but not Cdramas so the same excitement I had with English appear to learn Mandarin Chinese and it's been great. And next year I'm finally going to learn French probably not 10 minutes a day but not so much time either.

No lies. I spent the whole confinement on language learning throughout 02 years. 04 hours other 02 years, I spent too much time that I thank, and appreciate because language learning opened up my views, and perspectives on other areas of life, and ambits of my life, and I am now more aware, more conscious, and know what I want, and what I must do on life. No regrets during these years. I have never been hesitated on life. I have discovered a new way to linguistics. I have more consciousness on office, and hardship. I love you all. 💗♥️🌞

Laura, I love the transparency with both your strong points and the mindset stuff. 10 minutes a day can lead to a lot of progress, especially if the language is related to one you already know. But the key is to be regular! In my case, maybe Italian is the closest experience I have to your challenges. I still speak itagnolo obviously but my comprehension improved a lot through regular exposure and with a little effort, I can usually have conversations about interesting stuff. Once on a train I was sitting next to a girl from Serbia and we had a fluent conversation - I spoke Spanish and she spoke English. She couldn't speak Spanish but understood absolutely everything because she had been watching Spanish TV shows ever since she was little. Many people in India (and other countries sometimes) learn Hindi just by watching Bollywood movies.
