Does this just apply to big blocks with radical cams?? Because I have a 351W with a big-ish cam (243/251 @ 50, 109 LSA) and I've never seen any advice that said to go above about 14 degrees at idle, but I definitely have that eye burning richness at idle. Its also a mechanical distributor, not vacuum.

The real problem is whit your wife and neighborhoods noisy cam bad timing and gas smell,big trouble😂

Don;t forget. a lot of people with radicle cams turn the idle speed screw in way to far, ignoring the secondary side idle air. this uncovers the transfer slot and the engine by passes the idle circuit and run off the transition fuel side of the circuit. always balance idle air front and rear.

MSD? Black stop bushing, 1 blue 1 light silver spring. set initial to 20 and total will be 38 all in by 2800. easy peezy.

Hello, I’m looking at a 1975 nova with a 350 edelbrock and a 750 Holley carb. When I went to go look at it I noticed it idled just fine.. when we gave it gas the engine sounded like it bogged out and it made alittle pop noise after reving it up and down. What do you think the issue could be and should I stay away from buying it?

Initial timing should be 15-20 and total should be 34-36.

With your suggestion you couldn’t get the idle low enough, if the starter would even roll the engine over.

If you put a small HHO unit on it and get it running right, all the gas smells will go away. Even get some water dripping out the tailpipe. My 6.7 stopped smelling like a school bus. Just an idea...

Wow. This popped up on my watch list and Im glad it did. I just got my dads (passed a few years ago) 57 chevy post with a BluePrint 396 w 491 hp, 10.4:1 comp, and a roller cam, .544 intake .555 exhaust. I have been having the exact problem on it. Stinks up the entire garage sitting at idle. The distributor has a vacuum advance canister that is capped off. Not sure why. Im still playing with it and after learning this, will play with it some more to try and get that stink down. Ive checked the timing and total is at about 34 degrees @ 3500rpm. Im starting to think that is not enough. Well,, one more reason to get back in the garage.

This is a long shot but I'm just in Columbus and I've got a 66 mustang I can't get to idle right, tried everything, need an expert, is Mikes shop still open?

love the advice my dad taught me all this and never used timming lights I run a 400 SB with a 272 HE Comp Cam use the carb cac advance as you stated and i adjust mechanical advance by going up to the point that it huttt... hutt. hutt hard starts after 3 crank revolutions then back it down a tad so its around 1 hard huttt thump to start. Runs amazing no light needed.

I got a 67 el Camino that my father and I restored . We put a 502 big block crate in it. Since then my father has passed , so I’m trying to figure this motor out to run and idol perfect. When I shut off motor it tends to after fire . I would like to tune and get it going . Would you have any suggestions for my to start to look for or do?

I still like my carburetors and my air tools. My son has a holley terminator x on his 347 and is really trying to sell me on it for my 408 build. Funniest thing I ever heard a guy say is " I can't race tonight because I forgot my laptop at home". That just ain't me.

Ingition you mean 36 at idel at lest and locked. 440cui mopar.Have only 18 digrees idel have no vaccum i weel test more advace tanks good tips!👍
