We are all anonymous. We can pretend to be anything or anyone we want, because so few know us. So easy to copy the rich and famous, and even pass yourself off as one. But you can only go so far with that sham. Everyone wants to have a devoted rich and famous friend, but that is the one thing the populace cannot have. No one is going to invite you to dinner at their mansion, or for a weekend on their yacht, or a trip to a fancy resort on their personal plane, if you do not appear to be one of them. They are, of course, so thoroughly aware of their transitory status, that they long to meet such a devoted powerful and influencial friend themselves. And of course the populace hungers to meet such a powerful, influencial friend in a country with a two tiered justice system that is becoming more and more a caste based society.

I think all the social media and television promote it too much. All the luxury and blingbling lifestyle that celebrities try to sell us. If you ask 100 people of what is their dream. How many of them will answer something like astronaut or singer or actor. I'm sure most of them will answer that their biggest dream is to have big house full of luxury items and expensive car.

I just found your channel and I think your making excellent points and find your presentation palatable. Im going through some of your other videos now and they make me reflect on my own experience of what you are discussing. Im not sure what it would mean if you're thoughts and ideas took hold, but I'm glad you're trying to get these ideas out into the ether. I've had similar thoughts and reactions to consumerism and the current version of western capitalism (I call it Cowboy Capitalism), which regularly misses the mark when it comes to ethical scrutiny.

I have bought hiking shoes more than 10 years ago and value the quality and the experiences it helped me to have and landscapes I was able to see, a shoemaker recently renewed it and now I can use it again for years again. this for me is quite the opposite of depthless consumerism and it makes me happy as it is something useful and worthy from many perspectives😊

The most vital human quality is endowment…Once a human has endowed a person, place or thing with value or not (Think of Canes sled Rosebud in the film Citizen Cane) almost nothing can change it…
All is in the mind as any good ad man or propagandist knows.🥃

Our Human Ecology class at the university of Guam just watched this documentary. Thank you so much for this work as we are exploring the concept of consumerism in our course and your in-depth analysis with wonderful citations that draws on academic work and literature is so useful. We would love for you to join our class on zoom if possible just for a short conversation....

As all great and ancient teachings have pointed out… It’s not bad to desire but that we fail to investigate “just what desire is”?…And just what are these people, places and things that we desire and name that no matter what never seems enough.
That there is a huge misunderstanding…There is no connection whatsoever between subjective desires and so called objective people places and things…none.
It’s like jello thinking if I only had a thermonuclear bomb…THEN I WOULD BE HAPPY!!!
That’s why ancient wise guys called it ILLUSION.🤡

Oh, this is why I really like the narrator: he is a fan of philosophy. I watched him discuss metaphysics on Immanuel Kant. May the Almighty bless him for helping the common folks abroad. We need more folks recieving a good education from people like him... doing good to do good. 🎉

Problem is not with us having too convenient life. The actual problem is the shift towards totalitarian policies all around the world that want us to feel bad for even existing.

I only buy products that I need and will make my life easier. I refuse to conform to consumerism. Although I don't judge others if they wanna buy a bunch of stuff.

We Buy cheap because we can't afford good and expensive. What about some people who got private jet planes, twenty cars, and twenty properties?.. And who made us all consumers? Who makes all this things for us to buy? For example Why is I Phone gets broken after two years of use? Maybe because there next IPhone is ready for sale? We don't produce thing we buy and if there million of options that not our responsibility.

Can consumerism exist in an egalitarian society? Today we are generally unequal within our countries and especially around the globe. What if there was no ridiculously cheap labour and abusively exploitative resources and production? My hunch is, that would influence the situation of consumerism radically.

It feels like you are talking to religious people who found themselves involved in some unseemly cult. Like "are you sure you need this religion? It might be flawed, think about it".

America was built on the Protestant Work Ethic. There's a deep and profound reason it was never called "The Protestant Consumption Ethic." The Bible says this about the subject:

Ephesians 4:28
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth
