The Story behind the Most Influential Rally car of all Time

The Lancia Stratos is an awesome car. But what many don’t know is that this legend of rallying was the first ever purpose build rally car. Where many other manufacturers would modify their road going models for rallying, this car was build with 1 goal, and 1 goal only. To dominate the rallying scene

So In the early 1970s, Lancia was seeking to create a successor for the Fulvia, a sedan turned coupe and a another motorsport legend. Now The story goes that Guiseppe Bertone learned of Lancia and their plan to create a new rallying monster. And so Bertone instructed his team to create a futuristic yet functional show car. With one goal. The point of this show car would be to convince Lancia to abandon its longstanding collaboration with their rivals Pininfarina for there future project.
Now The man behind this automotive revolution was Marcello Gandini, the visionary designer from Bertone. A maestro of sharp lines and bold curves, Gandini had already penned icons like the Lamborghini Countach. But with the Stratos, he outdid himself. Inspired by the era's fascination with wedge shapes, he crafted a machine that seemed to cleave the air itself. The low-slung cabin, nestled behind a truncated, almost insectoid nose, flowed seamlessly into a truncated tail, punctuated by the famous hexagonal rear window.
With this design Bertone’s team took a Fulvia Coupé that belonged to one of Bertones closest friends, dismantled it, modified the chassis, moved the engine in a midship position, and created one of the most radical concepts of the era, called the Stratos Zero. The plan was coming togheter now they just had to show there work.
And they did, Lancia loved it and the rest is history...
