I miss the days when the 970 paired with 32gb of ram was the peak for gaming performancd, although very expensive. Nowadays 32gb of DDR4 is so much cheaper.

Here in the us at least you can regularly find the Titan X (Pascal) as low as $160 on the second hand market. It is roughly equivalent to a 4060 in raw performance for arround half the price. The only issues with it is the lack of support for newer Nvidia technologies like RT, DLSS, Reflex and frame generation as well as worse power efficiency.

I have one in my htpc for pcsx2, cards like these show that you don’t need a crazy expensive pc to have an enjoyable gaming experience

Had a GTX 970 from 2015 till 2023, in my gaming PC i also built in 2015.
In 2023 i took the chance and got a used 1080 for 130€ (germany) to be able to play with a bit higher settings, also enjoyed that card. But now in 2024 i decided my CPU and therefore mainboard were way too outdated so i got a complete new PC with now a 4070 Super.

Still hold onto my 970 dearly, loved the reference design even though you cannot see it haha

Let's be honest, we are about to be 2025. The 970 with it's 4gb of vram and unoptimized drivers is just about dead. Unless it's a gift or you get one for $50, it's a hard pass. You could still get buy with a gtx 1070.

I have the GTX 960 and i have played flight sim 2024 on it with no problems, flying about the ground is not the best but still works crazy, old tech amazing and for racing games to like AC no problems.

Two years ago i had to chose between a GTX 970 and an Rx 570 4gb on my budget build, i ended up getting the 570 back then i found it cheaper than the gtx 970 and my psu only have one pci-e conector making the pick of the 970 more expensive if i have to change the PSU. At the end turned out ok, the only real issue im seeing with this card, and seems to be something of all AMD cards, is that having more vram doesn't mean so much, since the texture compression is worse and utilize a lot more vram than nvidia. So in the practice the Rx 570 4gb turns out to be more comparable to a 1060 3gb version. Not that bad anyway, but still. Aside from that im very pleased with the build, playing even some older AAA games like Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom Eternal, The Evil within, and a lot more. So basically, 8th gen AAA games run fine for the most part, and even some newer not AAA games run well on it. So not dissapointed in getting a cheap mid range card from the past for my ultra budget build.

The best thing i learned about building budget from older parts, is "Do not go cheap on the CPU, the absolute best you can buy". Seems a little obvious for me right now, but it wasnt when i was learning. The generations of CPU and GPU mean's something on the long run, maybe on paper sounds ok to get an old i5 but it has aged not so well as we wish it did. The 4 core 4 threads is completely dead for modern gaming, so even if it game, it struggle a lot in some cpu intensive games. On paper 6th/7th gen i5 should run for example PUBG after all it is in the recomended system requierements, it ask for a an i5 6600k or ryzen 5 1600. Spoiler, the Both cpu struggle a lot on PUBG more so the i5 6600k. If i had to buy a system like this again, i would even downgrade the gpu if needed to get a better CPU, having a nice gpu is wortless if the cpu is bottlenecking like crazy.

Just a heads up I've got a follow up video for this PC coming soon. It’ll just be the benchmarks with more modern titles, older titles, and emulation too. Cheers!
