This film did poorly and got bad reviews when it first came out in theaters. People didn't want to see Jim Carrey in a role like this, they wanted more of how he acted in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber which all came out in 94. Cable Guy was basically completely forgotten about when Liar Liar came out in 97.

Man this one was really hard to watch for me, cause when I saw this back when I was a kid I felt like Chip was one of the first people that finally made sense to me. I guess the difference is just that instead of be an overly emotional clingy friend I just sorta started withdrawing and avoiding all people. I got a bit better by now, but I still feel like I 100% understand every reason behind what he does. I guess I didn't really realize just how crazy people would think he is though, but at least I feel kinda better about the direction I went in back then now.

Man...this movie is such big nostalgia for me. I was only 10 or so when this movie first came out. I found it quite funny to me. Unfortunately, the movie critics and audiences at the time utterly hated it. Critics thought it was asinine. While audiences found it an unusually dark role for Jim compared to his previous movies at the time. Overall, this movie nearly destroyed Jim Carrey's career. Well, at least it is finally getting respect from modern audiences.

We watched this when it came out on video when Matthew Broderick was the bigger star & Jim Carrey was on the rise. We hated this movie. We thought we were going to get Ace Ventura 2. We watched it again a few months or a year later & loved it. We realized it wasn't really a comedy, it was a slow burning thriller with a psychopath tormenting an innocent man. It's brilliant in the way it didn't give people what they expected. We still quote this movie among my friends to this day.

Ya know, Jay. I have a theory as to why the cable guy won't say what his real name is: Maybe he's spent SO MANY years doing this and using TV and movie characters as aliases to cover his tracks, that he just doesn't REMEMBER his real name anymore. Pretty sad when you think about it.
