one, you did not hit the house! two, a hitting wedges on the lean side of the tree, driving in with a axe would force the tree farther away from the house. more wood on the left/hinge would have helped and yes tractor angle would help. overall, i thought you did a good job. it is easy to pick apart a job after the fact. well done.

you could have used a plunge cut to avoid a barber chain from the lean. i am not sure if birch trees with their soft wood are prone to barber chair (apparently not).

as others have noted, a sizwheel cut with more holding/hinge wood on the side of the lean (in addition to a tractor) can help a leaning tree fall a little away from the lean. maybe wedges could have helped too with more hinge wood.

I am not a tree faller, but I do make a lot of wood bowls. To me, the rope you were using to pull the tree over were not high enough to get good leverage to make the tree fall where you wanted it to. Also, the wind probably blew it a little off course.

Honesty is always best. I have sometimes altered the pull angle a couple of times before being satisfied. Even then … you are still at the mercy of internal tree decay, as seen here.

The error was just that the two spruce trees wasn't cut down first! No matter what the owner wished, those two ugly spruces whould have been cut down first!

With this kind of leaning, the result is more than nice, it's perfect !

I love your tutorials since I discover strong skills I didn't have before (I am an amateur, not a professional) !

I have 2 questions :
1. Is it possible that a shark gills would be better than a simple hinge in the present case ?
2. Was it possible to cut the 3rd stem as 1st or 2nd, using a rope to attach it to a remaining one in way to have a controlled rotation during the felling ?

Aim more against it's lean and pull slightly more angle away as well. Birch is very strong and flexible

You are lucky the tractor knew how to flor it. If he went slow, I think the tree would have gone perpendicular to the line when the hinge snapped and you would have clipped the corner of the house. Luckily he pulled it fast enough that the momentum carried it forwards and away form the house.

I never trust old birches with side lean, they can snap like glass. I learned it the hard way, it snapped a 10cm hinge post without much lean on it.

I was concerned when the one ladder was parallel to the tree and flush against it (when tying ropes). It looks dangerous for the climber to use a ladder like that.

My observation was that its unlikely you can pull a hard leaning tree back against its lean, better to have planned to drop it 90 deg from its lean pretty much where it fell, also a deeper notch so that the hinge is wider would give it better holding strength.

With a lean that bad, it's a major win that it didn't fall on the house. 👍😀

I have found that on a problem child like this, if you cut your hinge at an angle to the notch, rather than parallel to it, (basically, give yourself more wood on one side) the tree will pull toward the thicker side of the hinge. It's a tongue in cheek calculation, but it can help in a tricky situation.

Do you ever use throw lines to set the rope higher into the canopy? That felling tong system looks super useful, but I think having a bit more leverage up higher would have made a difference and you would not have to play around on latters. Great video!

Szia!

Thank you for sharing your experience from this difficult situation with the tree leaning towards the house. But in the end you could leave the house without damage, congratulations. As a warning for others, I highly appreciate your honesty showing that we are all humans and we can encounter situations, where we might overlook possible factors, even after many years of practical experience from felling trees. There are videos out there which ended with some serious damages.
Thumbs up for you and always stay safe.

…. I’m in America and I’m an arborist. I do things a little differently…. First I climb up, take limbs and weight off in places that need to be taken off then I topp the trees taking big hunks of the canopy to reduce the chance of barber chair… I base tie an anchor to be pulled by a heavy machine or a truck or if not available I come along to a suitable place…. Only once I have positive control of the tree do I make my notch to ensure the safety of the house and my people at work…. Interesting technique, putting the rope in the tree. I’ve never seen that gives me so many ideas.! I’m glad no one was hurt. Thank you for posting the video.
