Fire and Ice! Flaming Ice Demonstration

Calcium carbide reacts with water to form acetylene gas. This gas is highly flammable and often used in welding and cutting torches.

In this demo, ice is added to calcium carbide. Water from the melting ice then reacts with the calcium carbide to form acetylene, which is ignited. The end result is what APPEARS to be flaming ice. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
