ОтветитьWhen I was on that ferry there was sleeping permitted in that lounge where you said there was no sleeping permitted
ОтветитьThank you for this video! I recently moved to Calgary from Newfoundland (where I was born and raised) and this made me feel so much at home! I really needed this video today❤️
ОтветитьOh my God I wish I could have interviewed for this, but I don't volunteer (yet) at the Avondale museum. Basically she's right in saying that the track guage was the primary reason, but it was also a blindness to the infrastructure that let Newfoundland build to where it was, and an unwillingness to fight for what built us. A major factor though was world war 2. The Americans and Canadians both used our railway for freight and troop transport, and contributed little to the maintenance of the railway itself. As a result, by the end of the war the railway was already in bad condition, and out province wasn't able to pay for war damages. A few years later, Newfoundland merged with Canada. And our railway was merged with CN rail. Over the next 20 years, CN divested the Newfoundland Railway to a subsidiary, Terra Transport. With the new construction of the federally funded trans Canada highway, the railway was seeing less traffic. CN, looking to divert funds, finally shut down Newfoundland operations, after petitioning the government to allow them to shirk their constitutional duty, and their duty according to the treaty with Newfoundland. Newfoundland got a paltry $600m in federal highway money in exchange. We got saddled with all repairs from the new roads built with federal money though, so between the higher infrastructure expenses and the higher prices for goods transported by truck... Well. Newfoundland's lovely, what do you mean?!
ОтветитьVery cool to see and never saw any press about your visit though. Greetings from Paradise, Newfoundland 😎🤘
Ответитьas someone from the Deep South... why tf are they into confederate things in Newfoundland. gross.
ОтветитьNewfoundland is on my list of places to visit.
Thanks for the video.
Michael, I am very sure that you ARE a Brother from another Mother! God bless you my friend!!
ОтветитьFantastic start to your trip across Canada. My dad was born in Fredericton New Brunswick so I've been to New Brunswick several times. Never farther east than Moncton or farther west than Montreal. My wife has never been to eastern Canada so it is on our bucket list, and Dildo is on that list.
Ответить"Taking the train across Canada", while gesturing towards a ship. 😂
ОтветитьI remember the first time I learned about Dildo on the Bob & Tom show. Captain Dildo is the local historical figure and to this day it's still funny. Awesome to finally put some scenery to the name.
ОтветитьI've gone from Van to Halifax.
I used to work on a rail grinding train for a company called loram.
YES YES YES!!! The playlist, I was looking for!!!
Thanks already!!! I love Canada! Canada is no1 on my bucket list!!! (Thats why US wont be possible to me.)

ОтветитьMy family is from Newfoundland, I’ve been many times. I’ll need to visit the museum next year.
ОтветитьI hope Newfoundland gets its railway back. I wonder if RM Transit has seen this?
ОтветитьFrom Wikipedia:
"The Newfoundland Railway was a narrow-gauge railway that operated on the island of Newfoundland from 1898 to 1988. With a total track length of 906 miles (1,458 km), it was the longest 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow-gauge system in North America."
And now I want a Mooseburger.
ОтветитьI cried watching this.
I moved to live with my then boyfriend in a town nearish Grand Falls-Windsor.
They forced me to move back to Ontario after we had a fire in our apartment and his mom didn't want to keep me there.
I'm suffering from PTSD from everything my ex put me through, and that translates to having trauma about the island/whole province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This also extends to the Maritimes as well.
I continued watching not only because you're presentation style is so interesting and attention grabbing, but as a sort of exposure therapy.
I returned to Ontario back in March, and we broke up fully after 3 months of torturous back and forth. He told me he cared about himself more and that's the last time I heard his voice. He got a new girlfriend 2 or 3 days later and they're still together now. He never loved me and it still rips me apart. I still have belongings held hostage by his mother who refuses to mail them to me and I've had several plans to retrieve them fall through for health and financial reasons.
I need to go back to the island to get my things and close that chapter of my life. I need to go there to dissociate the island from him, because it is a beautiful land with lovely people. I need to make the experience one that is my own. One that I can cherish forever.
But until then, I suffer everytime I see or hear the word Newfoundland. I cry whenever I see a piece of labradorite. Newfoundland dogs and Labrador retrievers make me tear up. Coming across people or watching videos or shows with Newfoundland actors freezes me in place.
I can't enjoy life right now because somehow the Island is everywhere. I cannot escape it, so by watching this video, I'm choosing to embrace the tears and the sadness.
Today I saw a quote from a Facebook group based in Newfoundland (I was reading an article about AI photos of birds of all things! The photo discussed was posted to this group so I took a peek at the group).
The quote said:
"Let your tears of 2023 water the seeds you plant in 2024".
And how fitting is it that such a quote comes from the place that has given me so many tears over this last year?
As we Canadians who live on the west coast say “the west coast is the best coast”
ОтветитьI’ve watched the whole series, but this has to be my favorite video of them all.
ОтветитьThat couple that asked you to join them at the start. So wholesome ❤️
ОтветитьI’m from Halifax NS originally but my family are from Newfoundland
ОтветитьMy Poppy dropped out of school in grade 8 to work on the trains in NFLD. I have a framed rail tie that was part of the NFLD railway!
ОтветитьI just came across this video of yours. I hope to watch them all. I started with the your series going from Florida to Alaska. Now this series from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
ОтветитьWait, Capt. Dave salted his parents to preserve them?
ОтветитьI dispute the best fish’n’chips in Canada claim, The Junction located on Hwy 15 just outside Seeleys Bay Ontario has perfected Fish’n’chips.
ОтветитьI assume Yukon/Northwest Territories/Nunavut just don’t have passenger trains and you aren’t someone into cargo train hopping?
ОтветитьIve always wanted to ride cross country on a train and to ride along with mike would be a treat, love ur travels Mike ✌️❤️
