Fascinating, I have a VW. And now better understand the company and how far along they came.

Now I need to watch EVEN MORE Top Gear..... Btw I just love how the Germans pronounce Volkswagen. Here in the USA it sounds like we're saying "volts" and "wagon". (Short a sound.. XD)

He should of mentioned the air cooled flat-4, it's one of the things that makes the beetle so special.

Designed by Nazis? Who knew? I suppose my father did, he was stationed in Germany after the war and bought his first Volkswagen as soon as they came out back in the States. He moved from the Beetle to the Rabbit and then to the Golf which was a truly nice little car. Glad to find out such interesting stuff about a car that was part of my childhood.

1) Restored the German spirit and former frontiers. 2) Built the autobahn across the most scenic locations in Germany. 3) Enacted the first in recorded history animal protection laws and various environmental measures. 4) Brought back the ruined economy and improved living standards in Germany and occupied territories. A few more than just one.

Fun fact: Ferdinand Porsche was one of the designers for the Beetle and it was an inspiration for Porsche 911.

I don't really think Hitler's good qualities will be overlooked, it's just that compared to his bad, they don't come close to making a dent

hitler in fact didn't do much good at all since it was mainly the work and ideas of other people he gets credit for (like the autobahn for example) he was a demagogue and a terrible leader that wanted to be napoleon

"he was a demagogue and a terrible leader" oh, just like the one ones from the other side of the world in that time. (hi uncle sam, and captain american) tell me one president or political party that is not demagogue.....

Yeah, for some reason this wasn't mentioned in the video. It might not be the most important information about VW but I do think it would have been worth talking about it.

No, but there is the moving story of Hans Massaquoi, whose father worked for the embassy of Liberia and grew up in Hamburg when the Nazis rose. His autobiography is called "Destined to Witness" and I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately the reality isn't that great. There are speed limits on most Autobahnen and even without them there are massive traffic jams, road works and stupid drivers who can't control their cars. Plus loads of trucks with overtired truck drivers. I'm guessing it's not that much of a difference, but the occasional speed rush. (risk of death inclusive) Sorry to burst your bubble but you know us germans: notorious killjoys ;-)

not defending hitler, just bringing to light that all the "good guys" were the same shit as the "bad guys". It's been all propaganda all the time, the people they always said to defend were just pawn in both sides, hitler also said it was to defend it's country (if you read some history books you'll know why). What people dont get is they are just pawns because they are stupid and ignorant (reciprocally cause-consequence). That why poor (whole life) usually means uneducated. just compare.

that guy at the start of the video knows nothing about vw history. The prewar cars carried de volkswagen logo on the hubcaps and the factory was already called volkswagen verke but hitler decided to put the kdf name of the car later on.

I think he knew exactly (or had much luck) how to satisfy the normal german ppl in the 30s and therefore became so popular and gained the power to start the war. For example hitler "invented" the Kindergeld (Child benefit), a social security payment for families with many kids.

People want to see Hitler as some disney villain or Dr. Evil, and think that people are either angels or demons even though in the real world people are complex, capable of love and hate, kindness and violence. That manicheistic view of the world leads to fanatism and xenophobia. So yeah, the same guy who wanted every german to enjoy a car was also in favor of genocide. Think about that complexity when you choose your politicians.
