What's missing is a development model that mirrors the NHL.

Call it Major Junior "Basketball"

One league 16 to 20, and two drafts:

An Amature draft: 16 and 17 year olds

And an Overage draft: 18 and 19 year olds

And I emphasize the " overage" aspect of it. A player can play "Major Junior " until he's 20 and still be recruited , retaining his 4 years of College eligibility while still developing, and enter College at 20. It's a brilliant system.

No prospect would ever be missed or overhyped, and no draft mistakes would ever be made. Players start facing top competition at 16, and can continue to showcase themselves at a high level until they're 24.

If all players did was score and score in every game, the 50-pt game would become the new normal. It wouldn't be anywhere as exciting as it is now.
