The prospect of interstellar travel is no longer sci-fi. It COULD be achievable within our lifetime! But, how would an interstellar rocket-ship work? On this week's episode of Space Time, Matt talks options for interstellar travel - from traditional rocket fuel to antimatter drives, could we travel to other star systems? Watch this episode of Space Time to find out!

I would use fission; we already know how to do controlled fission. NASA has tested fission rockets on the ground. Needs more fuel, but that's "merely an engineering issue". 🙂 There was a paper for JPL in 1962, "feasibility of interstellar travel" where the guy did the math and said you should be able to get to 60% the speed of light with fission, if you don't use the rocket to slow down. (if you DO use the same rocket to slow down, you're looking at 40% the speed of light. For a two way trip, 20%. But the estimates change if you don't need to use the propulsion rocket to slow down.)

You can actually use a magnetic sail to slow down; use the nuclear reactor to generate a huge magnetic field, and this will repel the solar wind from the target star, slowing you down without having to expend fuel. 🙂

Why can't they use the slingshot effect to slow down at the other end? As long as there are enough planets etc it might be doable?

With any of these proposed, and supposed methods there are many details that don't get addressed in these videos. As others have stated, hitting something, even microscopic, at these speeds would be catastrophic. With the proposed "warp drive", where, or from what distance from the ship, does the contraction of space-time in front and expansion behind the ship begin? There is space inside the ship and space inside the passengers, also. What about objects behind and in front of the ship, being in the expanded or contracted space? Could those objects be driven through the ship, from behind, or from in front of it, when the warping is started. Another question is; how far, in front of, or behind, is space going to be warped, and what would be the effect on exterior objects along the lines of the warping? This concept is a bit far out for this old plow boy to wrap his head around, if I think much about it.

Is the blackhole drive converting energy to mass ? But to power those lasers, you would still need a source of energy. Doesn't that just move the problem of where to get that energy? Or is the blackhole created at the start of the journey as a form of energy storage? But doesn't such a blackhole evaporate very quickly ? Moreover you can't turn it off, which is rather bothersome.

Anti-matter drive is a very exciting possibility! We just need to figure out how to mass produce anti-matter. The potential it has as an energy source is amazing. 0.8c! Can you even believe it? But with anti-matter still being so hard to create, it might take some time, and until then, fusion should work ok.

We've now taken hundreds of thousands ultra high resolution photos of space, in pretty much every direction there is. The answer to this is most likely to be as boring as the ending of the movie Ad Astra. There is no magic solution to our sci-fi fantasies. They are fictional. If space bending and "interdimensional interaction" was a thing, we'd seen some kind of natural occurrence of that by now.
I am not saying we're alone in space. Obviously not. I am just saying, space is so unimaginably vast that we will always struggle to reach any other interstellar civilisation. Sci-fi alternatives like "generation ships" will probably be the only way we'd "get across". A one-way ticket that'll take generations to complete.

There is also the option of chain fusion. From protium, to helium, to carbon fusion, extract fusion energy to the top.
Also far fetched.

More options, reverse fuel. Send through a Canon a fuel path. Try to create the concept of the Bussard engine of collected the fuel during the flight, just if it doesn't exist that fuel, you launch it before sending the rocket. Require a level of precision that it's probably impossible, but it can be explored.
Also, for previous colonized stars, laser or charged particles beams for solar or magnetic sails could also work for deceleration.

The durability of the materials that make up the spacecraft for voyages to other stars worries me the most. Regardless of the engine that is used for the trip. Break down or explode halfway on the trip. I mean cosmic rays do make materials brittle.
