This version of Just One of Those Things is short (less than 3 minutes). The AABA form is simply presented three times, but the arrangement of the sections makes the track interesting.
From the last A of the first form, which is typically reserved for the theme, Parker lets the piano improvise, which is uncommon, both in traditional and modern interpretations of standards. However, the saxophonist is known for these kinds of truncated themes, where entire sections are omitted or not played at all to make more room for improvisation. It’s not unusual to hear him, on his compositions or those of others, skip directly to the solo section without playing the melody.
Parker then moves into a full second form, delivering his chorus in his distinctive style, rich both rhythmically and melodically. Then comes the final AABA. The piano takes the first two A sections and leaves the B section for Haynes’ solo.
In just 16 bars, Haynes manages to develop his vocabulary efficiently and with taste. The fast tempo and high pace contrast with the more half-time feel of the theme but fit perfectly with Parker’s Be-Bop style. The rhythmic figures are simple—eighth notes or quarter notes—but it’s the distribution across the kit and the groupings that make this chorus interesting.
The beginning of the solo is quite traditional, with a snare drum and bass drum duo playing syncopated rhythms on every beat, typical of the drumming style of the 1940s. Haynes then develops his improvisation with characteristic gimmicks: distributing the same phrase across the different elements of the kit to create a sort of melody, and grouping eighth notes in threes (kick/toms/toms) to create a polyrhythm. He ends with quarter notes alternating between the bass drum and the drums, creating a line that’s almost melodic but very simple, before returning to the last A of the theme, concluding with a coda in half-time in a very old-school style.
