Great video! How have the HDD worked for these 8 months? With the 10Gb card, how MBPS are you able to read and write?

Great Video. can you tell me how do you manage the SSD s ? Like the workflow … do you copy projects from your NAS to the SSD s so you can work on it ? And after the project is done you delete it from your SSD s ?

Great video! What can you say about the sound the system produces with 8 drives? How much decibel are we talking about?

Thanks for sharing. Can you not set up the NAS as a RAID to give you some extra redundancy?

Hey man, REALLY appreciate you uploading this video. Although it sucks you had a DOA on that one drive, it actually answered a question of mine. So thank you for showing that whole process and not skipping out on it.

Why didn't you configure in raid so you just have the backup solution fixed within the NAS?

Finally! A true Step by Step Guide. Not only that, but your configuration matches my planned specs too. So now I know what's possible. Thanks! :)

You inadvertently showed the benefit of a NAS. You can start with two drives (mirrored) and add as you grow. The way the data protection works (in simplest form), you loose 1 drive for protection when you add up the capacity. The drives need to be the same size for optimal performance. This can save you a few dollars and provide lot's of expansion space.

Thank you for sharing about the expansive cost/benefit challenges of footage storage. I'm fascinated by the trade-offs between shooting 4:2:0 8-bit 4K on my C200 vs data challenges of FX6, etc. I really appreciate the NAS details in 2023. I've had many local high speed storage systems since 2006 when I started cutting but proxy workflow on a killer Synology starting to make a lot of sense. Thanks again! TJ

Why do you recommend NVMe cache drives for video editing? As far as I understand they don't help at all with reading large sequential data. Cheers

Hello Social, I have a question if you bought 18TB drives and in the end it reads only 16TB, it means that there is always a small loss in this case of 2TB, the question would be: If I use 16TB drives, would the Synology NAS system read it to me at 14TB each drive?

Enjoyed this content. Have you seen issues with performance when multiple users are accessing the device at the same time? Remote and local users? I really like your setup and it was a great example when one of the drives was bad.

HI, thanks for this video!
I've the same NAS and for now i'm using 16TB drives.
Reading on the Synology website it says that the maximum capacity of a single volume can be at most 108TB.
With all the 18TB disks you didn't pass it?

The NAS does not support you editing 4k video very smoothly as I believe, unless you do update to 10Gb ethernet hooked up. Another issue is the NAS SSD read and write speed. I would love to see whether the live 4k editing on NAS will be choppy since the PC M2 or Mac internal SSD can reach 4000 mb/s, which is insanely faster than any external.

some notes: It's important to install the. 10gbe or at least. 2.5gbe adapter. With current codes gigabit will be abottleneck. If you have a Mac Studio it comes with. 10gbe, if not you can buy a thunderbolt 2.5gbe or 10gbe adapters. PC users can instal a card (they are no longer expensive).

Thanks for the video. A tip: edit the part that shows the serial number, and in general never allow serial numbers or similar to be displayed. I work in TI and it's a risk. Don't feel bad about it you can do stuff I will never be able to in the creative space, but take action.

I wish I could have found a video like this for my QNAP, which I got two years ago, and still have issues with the format of it. That's because the internet went down half way through the formatting and I started again and it didn't seem to format correctly.

I dont understand, Snylogy does not allow third party NVMe drives. And the ones they suggest is SNYOLOGY BRAND and they are not above 800gb . How did you make 2TB NVME drives to WORK ??

Great job man, I love the video! I purchased the same NAS/drives and your video really helped me get it started right away. Curious though, why didnt you make it RAID 5 or any other type of RAID? Wouldn't that be better than paying $190 a month? ($2,280 a year) I understand there is cost to doing busnies but there is also unnecessary cost that you can end up saving for future investments.

This is absolutely the most useful version of setting up an 1821+ NAS I have seen and I have looked at a bunch of them. Thanks for sharing the nvme's and ram you actually used. Way cheaper than the Synology stuff. Just curious did you add two 32gig ram cards or just one? Synology says the official limit for the box is 32gigs, but 32+32 makes 64. That said, I have heard you can add 64gigs of ram. And two x 2tb sd cards is a lot of cache. But I'm assuming you are experiencing very smooth scrubbing the timeline. Is that correct? Thanks again.
