Top 3 CHEAP JDM Cars to Go Fast on a Budget

FTO was my first sports car, Good memories and good fun with the club. Picked my one up for 1200 euro. I moved onto a 1JZ Chaser, MKIV Supra, MR2 spyder and now drive a 350z but the old FTO had a character all its own.

What does "JDM" stand for?

Races are never on a buget. Which kills these options. Then when fuel crysis comes, nobody knows what to do (and gets cancer).

My dad has an FTO gpx, and trust me its as cool as the video makes it out to be, handles like a dream!, and has a beautiful v6 roar to boot, if you ever have a chance to get one, i would grab it without a second thought

A great cheap car for enthusiasts would be something like the Buick LaCrosse 2005-2009 with the 3.8L engine $2000 for a clean low mileage example, easy and very forgiving to work on, built on the w-body platform which has almost unmatched aftermarket support and though it is fwd, it's built like a sports car and has so much weight on the front, a bit of negative camber in the back, and some lift-off oversteer, you can easily break traction in the back and corner hard. And a little suspension work and it feels like it's on rails. I also am going to mention the 3.8L is a beefed up engine as they also came from factory (on the pontiac Grand Prix) with a supercharger? It's super easy to get kits for it and push 300+ horsepower on stock internals. The truest definition of a sleeper. Non-descript 4-door sedan beating mustangs? And sounding amazing while at it? Yes please!

None of these are cheap 😂

RX8 is good but you NEED to drive it like a sports car and do the up keep of well... a sports car

10-30 grand? in Canada you can find a s13 skyline r32 r33 etc for 20-30 grand granted some are above that but that is not cheap for some I’ll take a skyline over a chaser but I like 2 door cars 8-15 grand makes a little more sense for cheap

The RX-8 was filled with gaudy plastic all over the interior the navigation screen was prone to breaking and they put so much plastic under the hood to quiet down the angry Dorito. Catalytic converter costs 1,200 per and there are two on the underside. And depending where you live it requires a specialist to do the work or dealer costs. Ours sat on the car lot for almost a year. It smoked every time we started it up. Found out later that it was just rich from the short starts and stops. I ended up using it to get parts and that went away. It was definitely lacking the umph you'd expect from an icon with an rotory motor.

Too bad the FTO wasn't an option in the states

People think the RX8 is underrated? But yet I still would choose a Mazda 6 speed over it

... the FTO sucks ass. It's not fast nor really that Tunable. It is neat, but you're overrating it.

Toyota chaser tourer v ain’t cheap nowadays ffs

There are no cheap JDM to go fast. Your starting with an economy car motor for one that will take totally new internals no matter what JDM. Maybe S2000 cause it had racing pistons. But past that you need to make up the JDM gap (Gap in HP between JDM vs Euro and JDM vs American) You have usually a 200 hp gap with JDM. So past getting a way over priced car, you also need to drop 50k plus in parts to catch up to rest of cars. You want to save money go american muscle. Its by far best bang for buck!

Could just get an MR2 or an s13 for these prices if not way less

10-30 Grand is not cheap my guy, that's standard used car prices except standard for the most recent 10 years

Ahh yess the FTO, the car that should have gotten the eclipse gsx engine but never did, also barely left land of the rising sun, I wish they imported FTO's instead of the eclipses

the FTO shares he same fate as the Celica SS-III. terrible gear ratios. though i feel less sympathy for Mitsubishi. The FTO came in a track edition Version R and they still didnt address the gear ratios. theCelica SS-III without a track version, is still faster than the FTO. So its actually the true underdog. i havent seen any FTO version R in the states yet and its been 25 years already....

The FTO is super underrated and such a lovely car.. Shame its so hard to come by in Poland cause I'd buy one without hesitation
