Many Germans don't understand the difference between cake and pie. I have lost track of the number of times a German has told me they were going to make pie for dessert, and then I got super excited about it, only to be presented with a piece of cake. :) Dessert pie (and most types of meat pie) is almost always made with a type of flaky dough Germans call Mürbeteig. In the baking dish, there is usually a layer of Mürbeteig, then a filling, and then another layer of Mürbeteig (or another topping like streusel, whipped cream, etc.) on top. Cakes in Germany can have a base made of Mürbeteig, but that's not common in anglophone countries.
