You can increase the preview speed in kdenlive by decreasing the resolution of the preview, it's a recently added feature but it's really awesome to have it. It's the 1:1 button next to the preview monitor.

Thanks a lot for the "Just use ..." playlist. I did not know about half the software you talked about and I am going to try a few of them out in the coming future.
