Using PoE Cameras in HomeKit! (Scrypted & Homebridge)

hey Shane you inspired me to try setting this up but i was wondering if you can do a step by step tutorial on setting up the reolink cameras, i messaged in their discord and have been combing through google but are constantly running into roadblocks such as video feed showing up and then dissapearing right after (turning grey). There is also issues like, i can only connect 1 camera and not all 4 that i own. Super frustrating and this is coming from a web developer lol... any help is appreciated...

Hey Shane, I'm a loyal followers of yours, but just found this video as I'm looking for alternatives to Unifi Protect. It would be awesome if you can answer my question as I couldn't that from the video: I see that the NVR has PoE enabled network connectors on the back. does connecting the cameras to the Reolink NVR allows them to be find still on the network by Scrypted?

Any updates Shane with the integration? I was looking to get the Reolink Doorbell. Any thoughts?

Does this allow using reolink cameras for automation? e.g. when the someone is detected via reolink camera feed, i can turn on smart switches and lights, play something on my alexa, etc

Poe has nothing to do with camera features. Poe is just the power over ethernet. Maybe you want to say that you like ethernet connected cameras instead of WiFi…

Amazing video! I thought PoE camers in HomeKit is not possible, but now I am sure I want to do this at my new home. Could someone just clarify the below please?:
- the PoE cameras themself are connected via the ethernet cable which powers them and transfers the video footage to the NVR
- the NVR by itself is connected to the internet and can be accessed via its own internet interface within the network?
- To expose the cameras/NVR to HomeKit, we need somewhere to run the HomeBridge or Scrypted app, like a NAS, Raspberry Pi etc?
- Now, the NAS for example would be just connected to power and interner, right? I mean it will not be connected to the NVR in any way? Its just the internal configuration of HomeBridge/Scrypted that allows the NAS to access the NVR and live feed?

Sorry about the potentially dumb questions - I've just found out about this.
Additionally, would the Raspberry Pi be enough power for 4-5 cameras, 24/7 local recording and motion detection recording on HomeKit?

Loved the video. Tried this setup and got Reolink nvr and cameras. I have a working rtsp stream in a VLC viewer but can’t get it working on homebridge with camera ui. Have tried different stream inputs including what you have on video all with errors and doesn’t come through. Any suggestions?

How can it work with a NVR ? All the cameras IP are hidden from the network..... Can anyone help ?

Do you need the NVR for continuous recording or do you think a Surveillance software in the NAS (QVR Pro is Synology equivalent) can do the trick?

Hi Shane. How did you get your cameras to have an ip address in the same network as your home devices? Nvr typically gives the cams an ip address that is local to the nvr and not your home network. So you can’t access the cams directly in order to generate an rtsp address because they hide behind the nvr. Did you use a separate switch? Or configure the ports in the nvr?

anyone having this problem…my nvr of course is using an ip address within my network, however the nvr hands out different ip addresses to the ip cameras. i don’t see a way on the nvr to configure this. i get unreachable for all my cameras. i cannot ping the camera ip addresses, but can ping the nvr. which ip address should go in the video stream part of the scrypted/homebridge config?

I would like to use a PoE camera (Reolink or Unifi) with HomeKit but WITHOUT an NVR -- instead storing recorded video on iCloud (taking advantage of free storage; we have 50GB plan). Is this possible? If so, could I back up video to an external HD?

Took a week to wire all my POE's BUT it's MUCH better in the long run. So much more stable!

When i scan the scripted qr code it doesnt connect i get the message make sure to connect your accessories with ethernetcable but when i open scripted the camera does give image can u connect me to someone who can help me

Can you do this with any nvr? I can but Luma cameras and NVR through my company but want to make sure it’s all compatible. Building a new house and this smart home thing is a bit overwhelming.

Thinking of doing the same set up at my house with scripted would like a three month update are you still satisfied with your configuration? Any connectivity issues. I’ve done a beta test of my own using wyze Wi-Fi cameras with mixed results. Most issues coming from the cameras, themselves losing network connection. Hence why I’m looking at doing a wired POE set up.

Hey Mate, Can you set up the Homebridge or Scrypted Apps on your hallway iPad "hub" you run, instead of the Synology?

FYI- the DS920+ is end of life as of november 16th- you should update your link to the DS923+ (it also supports using the nvme slots as a storge target now!)

Love the video. Just had a question maybe you could do a video on. I can't get my reolink 810a camera to work in homebridge. It works on VLC. Not sure if I need to add another program or if it's just settings. this is the error I get FFmpeg prebuffer process exited with error! (null) - Unrecognized option 'rtsp_transport'. - Error splitting the argument list: Option not found -. I have been working on it all weekend and making some headway on it but having trouble I think on the home stretch. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you
UPDATE: I figured out all I needed was to install ffmeg package on my synology and then it worked. I am running homebridge natively. Hope this helps anyone running into this problem.

I have the Reolink 811a and I’ve literally used every single RSVP. There is on that website and none of them work. I can see it at home kid but it says no response.

Tried adding my reolink using scrypted. But it just tells me Snapchat failed.

So how far can you run a cat6 from the base and still have reliable connection? I’ve got a detached garage I’d like to run a few cameras to but want to keep the base unit in the house if possible.

Sounds like a nightmare to do without a tutorial. So if your board one day and have nothing to do. You should do one on how to set this all up. Sounds real good on paper though and easy.

@shaneWhatley - how did you get the individual IP address of the reolink cameras - I am only able to get the IP of the NVR

I’m using lilin NVR is it possible to link it on HomeKit, right now I’m using control4 to check the cameras if I’m not home.
