Peak Design Outdoor Backpack 25L Review (2 Weeks of Use)

PD should stay out of outdoor gear.

Such a fussy and ugly bag, doesn’t look it would stand up well in outdoor use.

It's so fiddly and slow

Translucent white for a hiking bag? I got a headache trying to figure out where Peak Design got a deal on all those bungee cords and how to manage them. Even Kristyne seemed like she was overwhelmed.

PD is an outstanding brand but this bag seems way too complex, too packed with overwhelming features and just not handy. If i go out i want something easy to manage and safe

This is not refined enough a design and is a surprise from this brand, who is normally really good about, well, design. I absolutely hate the dangling cords off the front; which look perfect to get snagged on some trees while hiking.

This is an outdoor bag, only in the sense that one takes it "outdoors." Calling a bright white bag an "outdoor" bag is clearly just a gimmick. How many bright white Osprey bags does one see? Zero. Or close to it.

What are the measure ?

Not unbranded zippers. Custom Zoom zippers, higher quality than YKK.

I like the overall look of the bag, but It doesn't look as though Peak Design's R&D includes seeing if you can actually use it day to day.

Looks like a decent bag for rambling. Don’t think it would replace my Berghaus for the mtns tho.

Did I hear you correctly that the hip belt can be tucked behind the back panel?

Luggage Passthrough 😢

All I can think of is rain running down into and filling up that front compartment. Damn. And then it'll probably seep into the main compartment via a seam at the bottom. Really weird design choice. They should've put a drain at the bottom of the front compartment at the very least. Or had it attach above and over the top of the bag/rolltop rather than in front. Love the wider shoulder straps, but PD being PD they have to have something narrow and uncomfortable so they chose the grab handle this time. WHY? Initially liked it, not much anymore.

Can the 25L or the 45L fit beneath the airplane front seat?

Oh boy. I have the full travel line & multiple other stamps & sling etc but have been frustrated by the pivot to phone cases which seemed to cause them to loose focus.
& now this just seems far too Fussy & Flimsy.

Could side pouch fits 40oz water bottle?

Looks like a bit of a miss from Peak Design. Outdoor bags are shockingly different from travel and daily bags. Looking forward to V2!

All those loops are indeed confusing, slow to use, often with both hands. But I do love the dual option to either use the rolltop (albeit more labor-intensive than normal rolltops) and the clamshell (angels: Ah! ~Ahhh!) to get access the whole internal bag space.

As an outdoor hiker who uses Zpack and Hyperlite packs I was thrilled to see a Peak Design roll top, after watching your video I feel the same as you, I don’t like how it unravels when closing. Maybe they can add Velcro or a magnet to hold it in place

This bag just looks like a lot of fuss. If you’re active or heading outdoors I’m sure most people will benefit more from a simpler design.

Good review! White though seems like an odd color choice for an "adventure" backpack. The bungee cord doesn't seem like it would be durable long term, but. hopefully PD has done some significant stress testing. I think a GoRuck 21 or 26 liter would be a better choice for the targeted market of this bag.

That long cord is something that’ll get tangled and knotted up within a week. You’ll end up cutting it off after it gets knotted up or stuck on branches on a trail. Really poor design element imo - you’d think a company like peak design would come up with a better solution to securing that little panel than 2 foot dangling cord.

It looks very nice. However, that ponytail on the bag is a dealbreaker for me. Even if it is somewhat magnetic, with the nature of strings, I do not want to get caught going in and out of doors, trains, buses, etc especially when traveling.

I think a lot of the critique of the bag seems to be from those who want to use it more as an EDC and/or travel. This line, though, is primarily marketed for the outdoors, hiking, rock climbing, and such. So for those activities, I can see how the plethora of cords would be helpful in lugging around bulky outdoor items.

Thank you for the review! I'm exercising a little more patience for the next launch - hopefully an EDC backpack geared more towards non-photographers, but can still cater to broad use cases.

Does anyone know if it has a luggage passthrough? I know it’s a hiking pack but I travel a lot with roller bags too. Hoping it can do both?

Too many cords. Tangled mess. No thanks on this bag - poor design.

Thanks for the review! I am planning on backing the project but torn a bit on the colour. I like the look of the white most but am worried about how dirty it is likely to get. Any thoughts on how easy it will be to clean?

Yes the color of the luxrul is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc ...

Rain... It may rain when outdoors... and then the top structure seems IMO to act like a bucket... 😞

I don't know what they were smoking at PD to offer an outdoor backpack in white? It will only look dirty after a very short time. Or is this version only intended for winter use in the snow?
Otherwise a bit overengineered as usual with Peak Design and Shimoda.

Good for hikers, looks messy for daily use backpack. I couldnt bother to deal with the bungee cord. It irritates me by watching from the video. Continue to look around for backpacks. Time to upgrade my Wandrd.

This is a bag in search of a reason to exist. I don’t think North Face has to worry about losing any sales to this.

To be honest, the top looks super weird to me. Like it's just gonna rain right into the front compartment, that strange zinge-opening leaves open space to the left and the right?
