Funny how here in Israel this situation would not be awkward at all. Not for the deaf and not for the tactless :)

Only 30% of English can be seen on the lips. So really his hearing friend is also offensive.
By the way, the gesture Tate did for “now” is actually very similar to American Sign Language’s sign for NOW. :O

She reminds me of one of the reluctant guests on Something Special. Justin Fletcher will effortlessly sign and tell the kids in the audience "and this is the waitress, Karen! Hello Karen!" And she will stiffly sign back like Catherine Tate.

Catherine's sketches are multi faceted in the truths they show:
She wasn't wrong to think it was charades.
She genuinely tries to communicate as best she can, having been made to feel embarassed. This is a bit like English people speaking loudly to be understood, in a foreign country.
The guy in the middle has done a classic Brit, which is to point the finger and then conveniently let her dig herself into a hole, whist doing nothing to help. Only inflame.
The deaf chap is being a precious and entitled disabled person, thinking everyone must know, and accomodate his deafness. Magically.
CT is a genius with her well observed comedy.
