Hmmmm....I think I might would actually like this one. I don't mind if the action takes place at the mid point - I'm more of a character driven reader and like the slow build of a good plot. Thanks for the info - I'm gonna pick this one up.

This review was on point! The characters definitely saved this book for me, and I so agree with what you said about them not being "one note." I liked Lan but didn't connect to him as much as you did. Maybe that's why it took me so much longer to get invested in the story.

I'm glad you agree about the pacing. I have read so many reviews saying this book is fast-paced and gripping from beginning to end. I consider myself a generous reviewer, but I just failed to see that. Those expectations worked against me. I agree that mood or being in the right headspace will affect enjoyment. I had to reframe my mind to slow down and appreciate all the subtly, and that's when I started getting into the story.

So true about the interesting world and cultural elements woven into the story.

Sorry ,Allen I tried, I liked the Poppy War, and ready for the read along for Sword of Kaigen but this is not close to Puzo likeness!! IMO!!!!! I tried!🎭

Is it “No Peak”, “No Peek”, or “No Pique”? None of them seem like a convincing gang name, but I’ll be reading this book someday. Also, how do you spell “boosh”? I totally saw this as a drama, like if this were a tv show I would have been binging it cause of all the drama, and those twists!! It was weird when I finished it I was very happy with the journey even though I recognized that some pacing moments were slower for me, but when I saw the whole picture I couldn’t think of much to change. Maybe less Bero or a different character or something that accomplished his stuff. Cause I did find that to be the least engaging and most predictable part of the story. Not that predictable is bad but in this case I was just not interested in him whatsover

I agree with you, I really liked Jade City but then I read Jade War and it was even better.

I keep staring at this book wanting to pick it up VERY soon!

I’m still in the beginning of the book but I love Hilo 😆 So far he is my favorite perspective to be in except for the chapter I won’t name here, that was a bit too much detail for me 🙈

Great review Allen! I actually really like Hilo towards the end of the book. I also liked the insight of how mafia families work and you’re definitely not alone because I also preferred how this story was told, not much action but a lot of political intrigue. I also gave it 4 stars because it was an amazing book but yes it was missing something hence why it’s not a 5 star book! I can’t wait to see what happens in Jade War 😁

Not going to lie, the entire time reading I kept imagining the red dragon crime syndicate with super powers. Was pretty great.
