I think in virtualized environments (where most servers are deployed), the hypervisor keeps switching between VMs, causing the "warmed" cached data to be lost. Also, in big data applications, the data is simply too large to fit in the cache (ever 256MB). On the other hand, a single and well optimised CPU-bound app is likely to take full advantage of the larger cache. Which CPU is best really depends on the deployment!

so basically AMD's cpu can handle up to 8 pciX 16x devices or 16 devices using pcix 8X or 32 devices utilizing pcix4
While Intels best chip shown here can run 4 pcix 16x devices or 8 pcix 8x devices or 16 pcix 4x devices. Thats a good perspective for crypto miners wanting to use multiple gpus properly.

I love your videos patrick, but this one could be improved a bit.
1. The constant moving between between the chart and you talking is jarring. Just show the chart, or yourself. Or put yourself in PiP on the side. I almost got a headache
2. There was a lot more reading of the specs. Your audience is more than capable of spec reading.
3. Get to the good stuff (your test results) a bit faster.

I ended up skipping to the results after 15 minutes of hearing you "READ" the spec sheet.

Good work and great content. Just please make it more focused and less headache inducing.

Commenting from the beginning. Looking forward toward the results. I am looking to purchase a new server for my section at work. I was leaning towards dual 16-core epycs just do I could utilize all 16 channels of memory.

The way work works, it would be late this year so maybe an Sapphire Rapuds with DDR5 and PCIE Gen 5. I guess anything will be an upgrade for dual E5-4617 and DDR3.

Why can't AMD and Intel just use S, D, & Q for their number of socket suffixes? All this creative naming does is cause meetings to last an extra minute because someone lost track of which part has what support.

Well , call me a AMD Fanboy , but Intel had stuck nearly 7 years on Quad Cores on the Mainstream Plattforms ( till 2017 ) , and high priced 10 Cores on HEDT ( = 1700 Dollar ) , the same for Servers ( more Cores , but very high Prices ... ) , AMD has corrected the Prices to a lower Level ... Some usecases are still Intel Domain , like cases were Optane is very usefull but i guess , give it 2 or 3 years , and optane like technics will be found on AMD too ... Technology dont stand still , but Intel did , due to its Problems with 10 nm and 7 nm ? , intel 7nm is already not that good than anticipated but it seems there are Problems too . As i see it , Intel has lost its advantage and as long as AMD dont have an Price Tag of 1700 Dollar for an 10 Core ....

I think people are forgetting that Intel illegally and underhandedly tried to put AMD out of business for many years because they couldn't compete on innovation. It was so bad in fact that Intel were forced to pay them over $4 billion after nearly bankrupting AMD with their illegal practices. If you're a "fan" of intel over AMD then you need a serious history lesson. Intel is why the PC market stopped progressing for years, they are literally the bad guys. Buying Intel means giving money towards the obstruction of innovation across the industry.

Despite clear edge by AMD over intel, yet the market is in Intel pocket. I can’t see the AMD overtaking intel in the enterprise field any time soon. Lenovo is taking very courageous steps, but will it last? Arms CPU is just looking at both of them with bad intentions.

While not deploying any cutting edge server hardware currently (2011v2 seems to work fine at home), I am on an Intel hiatus of sorts, going from Dual Xeons to an AMD 3950x 16c/32t CPU for my desktop budget workstation, I can almost guarantee that I will be back 100% on Team Blue sometime in 2022. While AMD have zero issues with raw CPU horse power, their job specific accelerator game just isn't even close. They fail to Intel in CPUs similar to the way they fail to Nvidia in GPUs. One needs only to look as far as Apple and the M1 silicon to predict the future. Fanboys or not, ask an Apple M1 powered Mini Power User who also owns and uses a Threadripper Workstation about what the future of computing looks like and they will blow your mind with Shaman-like insight. If you are a car guy, think 7L Big Block Chevy (and smile) and how you can barely hold down your lunch when thinking about the performance of a current 2-2.5L Turbo 4cyl. AMD is still making Big Block Chevys while Intel is Supercharging Small Blocks.......and Arm is Twin Turbo-ing Inline 4's. Arm+Accelerators+Efficiency will doom us all.

For 32C uni the better choice on availability is 7502P is 3.82% of Rome full run and 27% of Rome 32C available processors. And, well Ice lake, are essentially held captive within commercial installations and where only 8 of 40 SKUs are available; 8380, 8368, 8352Y, 6338, 6348, 6330, 6354, 6346 a better comparative option on availability, well in the same core and frequency range, Ice 8352Y. The reason many people don't like Intel is that they literally bribed the top 12 OEMs to not sell AMD CPUs, which destroyed the tech industry. NOBODY should support a company like that, or NEXT TIME you WON'T have any other choices but buying intel. When you really look at it, Intel has always used money to keep competition down, and every time that didn't work is when Intel fell behind.

Intel drove Cyrix out of Business by stealing their IP and tying them up in court. Blocked companies from competing in X86 meaning less competition and choice for us. Drove Voodoo out of business. And tied AMD up in a lawsuit for 25 years until they were in financial ruins and were forced to settle for pennies on the dollar in 2008. Then the bribery scandal was "stopped" in 2012 and within 4 years AMD starts turning the industry around and now is back on top. Intel has never been truly better. They got ahead by starving the competition of funds, poaching employees, stealing IP, and paying the market to shut them out.

I remember thinking that my 48k of ram was plenty and i didn't need a upgrade to 128kb. I thought 8 bit would be mainstream for ever .
Now I'm debating 128gb of ram and drooling over 196mb cache on desktop cpu's and optane

Intel does not have that much pcie lanes, but their architecture allows them to run at full speed all at once, when EPYCs don't (51.2GB/s per CCD) and the latency is lower. For example, when tested with a PM1733 on QD16x16T RR, it's very hard to get it over 1.1M IOPS on a zen3 platform but it's a piece of cake for RKL/ICX. When you have more drives it'll be even harder to optimize. I take it that EPYCs like give you several free PLX pcie switch chips.

Speaking about that... It's like you're rich enough to get 32 top tier Enterprise gen4 drives or nics to fill those lanes, or poor enough to squeeze it into one single machine, or motherboard designers would allow you to do so ;)

There are some people super-pro-Intel, and there are probably a lot of people that are pro-Intel, but the vast majority of the "super-pro-" crowd are for AMD. I don't think they really buy servers or much hardware at all. Being super-pro-AMD is just a hobby of theirs. And maybe they also own the stock.

Did Intel make the same change to DMI on server they made in desktop? Going from an equivalent 4 lanes of PCIE 3.0 to 8 lanes? That's a big boost in chipset bandwidth. Still less IO than AMD, but better is better.
