in reality, boeing made a bonehead mistake by allowing the x-32 to look so ugly. the military has a long history of picking the better looking product. maybe it just so happens in aerospace that better products tend to look cooler too, because the coolest looking planes are generally the best performing as well. but either way, boeing should have known the military wouldnt pick a plane that looked like a cartoon shark smiling with its mouth open

F35A = Airforce, F35B = Marine Corps, F35C = Navy and Marine Corps.

The F35A also did NOT have the need for the heavier landing gear required by US Navy aircraft.

Something few people mention is how truly ear and earth shattering these jets are. I live near one of the larger squadrons in the West "cough" "HAFB" "cough" And they friggin suck. They vibrate this entire valley. I miss the F-16's at this point. Then I go down to San Diego to fish and they're all over the place. The B and C versions from Miramar an North island crush My soul.

The cost analysis would be more comparable if the US had to build 3 planes to replace the F-35 and inflation adjust their development costs.
That's usually missed in the cost analysis,of comparing program costs. The US currently operate different fighter aircrafts depending on the branch, and this would replace most of them.

The F-22 is far superior but is way too good to let anyone else fly so they have to kill it and build something cheap to farm out to other Airforce so they still have the best only in the USA. Just like the stealth bomber was never built for anyone else.

Discussing the value of the F35 is useless. To know the capabilities of a plane only the pilots who fly in it can reveal its advantages, and all are enthusiastic, saying that they would not exchange it for any other!

Think of it this way. That money spent is to keep what we have. If we produced cheap easily defeated assets, we wouldn’t have our own money to spend on stuff.

My late grandfather worked on the Tornado jet and always said the biggest issue with western fighter jets is that engineers and pilots want specialised jets but politics mean that you end up getting planes that can make you a coffee and clean your house but can’t actually do anything properly

F-35 was not designed to be the F-22. F-35 is an officer jet, someone to manage the battlefield like a high ranking commander. Not a dog fighter, but Dog fighters boss.

B and C needs more powerful engine. Screw the similarities only the A variant has the best kinematic performance

But the 1200 mile range missile namely AGM-158D is yet to be delivered. It is likely to be delivered by January 2024 then why is it considered in the video.

That feeling you get when you do a bit of research and learn that the F-35 is a dedicated ground-attack fighter like the A-10 specialized in destroying SAMs. Yet, it's so advanced that it can do everything else better than every other fighter. It is probably outclassed only in dogfighting by the F-22 and in ground-support by the A-10.

Anyone who complains about the cost of the F35 must also complain about the cost of the F15

I don’t get the hate this aircraft receives. I think it’s pretty cool. That being said I still like the F-22 better along with the F-16, F/A-18, SR-71, B1B bomber and of course the A-10 Warthog.

I just went to the air show at Tinker AFB and the F35 is pretty amazing in the air. It can do things with thrust vectoring that made people's jaws drop.

Engineer here: I am surprised that everyone was surprised at the Dev cost.

You want a widget that is better than most other widgets, that does more than most other widgets, and oh you want the cost per unit to be less than other widgets...
This only happens 2 ways. Large scale production with extremely customized machines for the entire process, like Coca Cola machines to their soda can level of investment.... Or it needs a pinnacle of design. Add in new tech, and that equates to a really, really, REALLY expensive design.

And to be fair, they achieved all the goals of that design. Though I do remember reading about the bid price and laughing, because the cost of the ECRs alone would blow that budget.
