If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai would also have been very high on Roger Ebert’s list of greatest films.

One night flipping channels I stumbled upon Film maker/Director Errol Morris' "Gates of Heaven". I was captivated by the subject and the odd, eccentric and very real people in the documentary. That made me watch several of his documentary's each great in their own way. If you love documentary's you need to see his work.

What I have always admired about Roger Ebert was, regardless of whether he liked the film, he was honest about its qualities. He could admire the work, even if it wasn't to his taste. He understood film making and what makes a well structured. He was objective before subjective. The best.

I miss Robert's critique of film. Read his comprehensive books, watched the tv show with Gene and I do still go to IMDB to look up film and connect thru to Ebert's site for information. I admit I'm no genius when it comes to some aspects of film, but I learn, and I enjoy professional film critic reviews. I do wish more would speak on the ACTING part of movies more. some never mention that part much. Robert was gone too soon and I appreciate him more and more. TY for this video ! I give it a thumbs up !! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

2001 wasn't an adaptation of the 2001 Clarke novel. The novel was developed concurrently with Stanley Kubrick's film version and published after the release of the film.
The movie is based in part on various short stories by Clarke, including "The Sentinel" (written in 1948 for a BBC competition, but first published in 1951 under the title "Sentinel of Eternity").

What would be on my top 10 list? I'm not sure. Obviously I have not seen all the movies that Ebert had seen. So I have a much more limited number of films to select from. But my number one all time favorite movie is "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". The only movie I have a movie poster of hanging up on the wall. Other favs, in no particular order, are: "Patton"; "Oliver!"; "To Sir With Love"; "In The Still Of The Night"; "Shenandoah"; ....... cant think now, tired. Oh right "Godfather 1 & 2". "The Sound Of Music"; "West Side Story"; "Yesterday":

Roger and Gene had the integrity and conscientiousness to do entire programs about social issues as the movie industry was involved in them. One show warned about a disturbing trend of some movie makers glorifying predatory behavior.
Their outspokenness about this helped move society past complacency and showed the industry that it does have societal obligations.
