Wild Women of Hollywood: Barbara Payton

To her family, and the friends who knew her best, Barbara Payton was a joyful free-spirit: gutsy, intelligent, bold, fearless, a bit naïve, intrinsically wholesome, sometimes profane, and hopelessly idealistic. Obviously, she was a complicated woman, and her wildly inconsistent behavior often proved maddening to both the industry and those who cared about her.
Barbara was known to both family and acquaintances alike to be generous to a fault. She was also a compassionate person with a strong penchant for supporting the underdog, and was described by her sister-in-law and best friend Jan Redfield as having “an aching and totally trusting heart of gold.” She was a gourmet cook, a master upholsterer, a person who was highly skilled in interior decorating and design, a brilliant party hostess, and someone who truly loved and excelled in all things domestic. She was a worthwhile and talented person who also happened to have several formidable flaws; perhaps the most tragic being a seemingly insatiable need throughout her life to make one poor choice and bad decision after another.
Many people will agree that Barbara was excellent in the films Trapped, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, Bride of the Gorilla, and Murder is My Beat, and I hope that's never forgotten.

I like to see any attention given to Barbara Payton as she should not be forgotten. Like too many people, however, you concentrate solely on her mis-steps and misjudgments, particularly in her love life, and fail to give attention to her many and solid achievements. The fact is that Barbara Payton was a talented actress who gave outstanding performances in the movies @jod6cindy lists. She was also a caring and compassionate individual who did much to help other people when they were down. I personally believe that we still have a tendency to, when discussing the life of a female, pay more attention to her romantic life than to her accomplishments -- much more than we do with males. Example: Bob Hope was a promiscuous man and Barbara was among his sexual partners. But a video about Bob Hope is likely to talk about his accomplishments as a comic and his work in the USO while giving only a passing mention to his colorful love life. Barbara Payton could be a victimizer but she was much more of a victim.
