The most detailed discussion of what is going on in Russia that I have seen. So sad this channel isn’t getting more views. These explanations fill out the thumbnails provided by Vlad Vexler.

I’m wondering if this would help people understand Russia:
PuTin’s regime is like having the head of the FBI in full control of the USA.

Excellent discussion! I’ve read her article about the russian medievalism and its absurdity literally made me shiver for a couple days…🥶 I definitely would love to hear her perspectives on “What is russia?(its loss of identity/multiculturality )”, their aspiration for violence, their pathological obsession for 🇺🇦 etc. Thank you for this insightful conversation!🙏

Talking about why the West didn't tackle Putin earlier, I think they wanted the profits, but they were also scares of the "2nd army in the world."

Wow! An excellent and very interesting interview yet again. Professor Khapaeva's point that Russia needs to be defeated militarily and must subsequently become de-colonised is huge. This will be one of the biggest jobs of this century (among so many others....). Thanks again for your hard work.👏👏👏👏

Fantastic discussion as always, but I must express a criticism. Your guest is living in the United States, and say "both sides" (right and left) are flirting with antidemocratic tendencies, thinking of using violence. One one side you have Trump leading an attempt to almost successful attempt to overthrow an election, and actively and openly replacing election official to influence the next election. On the other side (left) what is there to compare to that push? It just seems to me a false equivalence. All the more strident because occurred in such a nuanced discussion.

Can it still be called a populist regime if most of the citizens don't even bother to vote? Watching POW interviews on Ukrainian channels and it is rare to hear a Russian say they bother to vote. Majority believe the outcome is already decided.

The odd thing about the Russian elite embracing “Eurasianism” is that the same elite are in love with western consumerism. In fact they love it more than most westerners. They measure their status by the possession of elite brands. Before the war the Chanel outlet in Moscow was the most profitable. (Customers included Ramzan Kadyrov’s mother and most of the Wags of the political elite). They own property in the west, they send their kids to school in the west, they get medical treatment in the west. The idea that they can suddenly go back to some imagined medieval past is problematic to say the least. Maybe for the older generation it seems kind of cozy, but young people don’t want that shit.

One of the best analysis of Russia! Thank you for this interview.
I would like to ask a question which I have not been answer for myself: Is it possible that there is a epigenetical tradition of cruelty and fear in the Russian society? It would be very interesting to research that especially compared to the drastic and horrid experiences of Ukraine over the last 100 years. Is it possible to find someone to talk about that issue at all? Thank you, Jonathan!

I understood Putin from the start. He hates Ukrainians because he wants their land. He never intends to stop. He came ready for filtration camps and mass genocidal murder by having materials and equipment including cremoratoriums at the border with Ukraine prior to the invasion.
What Putin wasn't counting on was that Ukrainians were not wild about this idea and figured out pretty quick that Putin wanted all Ukrainians dead. Imagine that.

I think the other reason for the untimely deaths is for their money. That is why the Russians killed in Spain and Italy also killed their wives and children, setting the scene as a murder-suicides. Putin wanted all their money so left no heirs.

The examples of western style democratic regimes in Russia are all very short lived. This indicates to me that these are not ideas that fit in naturally with the Russian ethos.

Another interesting vide I get from Professor Khapaeva is that she differentiates between right (Nazism) and left (communism). Nazism stands for National Socialism. It is a socialist idea. It shares with communism the goal of taking over the world to impose their own system. They also share the idea of state control or both the economy and society. Another thing they share is the use of both propoganda and terror, internally, to control the population. The real dichotomy is between liberalism (as understood classically) and totalitarianism.

Thank You for bringing Professor Dina Khapaeva to the Silicon Curtain I hope you have her on again I am tired of listening to the talk shows that have no idea of Russian history or why democracy failed in the 1990's. Why did democracy fail in 90's ? It appears that most of the world is not clear on that point How can we talk peace without understanding Russian history and how we got here?

Watching this in March 2024 - fascinating points, but Dina’s call at the end for militarily removing Putin’s regime… surely that’s an indirect call for nuclear war? Does anyone believe Putin would go down in a fight without firing nukes? She says you can’t negotiate with Putin, and you just have to fight him. If that leads to nuclear holocaust, which isn’t implausible, then isn’t negotiation the only option left?
