According to Albert Bouchard, the drummer for Blue Oyster Cult, of the 3 producers there that day in the studio when the actual album/song was being recorded in 1975-76, producer Dave Lucas asked Albert if he could try using a cowbell in the song. Albert tried it but didn't like how it sounded on the recording. Lucas kept insisting on the cowbell so Albert wrapped some tape around it to try and mute it. They tried that but it still didn't sound completely right. Lucas was actually one of the 1960's "MAD men" (i.e. Madison Ave) who was really good at jingles and was very instistent that the cowbell was what was still missing in the song so instead of using a drum stick on it, Albert used a tympani mallet on the taped up cowbell. They ran through the song again and when they played it back voila - everyone loved the COWBELL, LOL. True story...
