I knew he had turned down an audition for it but didn’t realize it was for the 8th! I’m kinda glad he came around to be 12 and we got to have him and Paul McGann!! ❤️❤️

Look at pictures of Capaldi when he was younger, I can definitely see him pulling off 8 no bother at all. The thing about 8 (going by the movie) and 12, is that they're both super passionate doctors. It's just 8 is more in a romantic way, and 12 in more of an aggressive way. I could see Capaldi and McGann pulling each other's doctors off easily enough.

Apparently, Christopher Eccleston could have actually gotten the role. He was straight up offered but turned it down, this is on wikipedia, and I haven't been able to find a source, so grain of salt and all that.

Right decision, McGann was thrust into a risky Americanised pilot that Fox eventually binned.

"When you heard Eric Roberts was in it." "Think of the amount of Big Finish you would have done by now" Frank Skinner is the perfect host for this. We need more of him!

I adore the Movie, I watch it regularly, but it would mean that series 8 and 9 wouldn't have Peter which would be a great shame

Paul McGann and John Hurt are the only actors who have played the Doctor, whom I've known before they became the Doctor. Actually, I knew and became a fan of McGann 20 years before I even knew he had played the Doctor. I would LOVE to see a series with him. All the others actoes, I knew them because they became the doctor.

Glad he turned it down, McGann and Capaldi are my favourite Doctors...weird to think Capaldi could have voiced the Doctor in Scherzo and Dark Eyes...

Yes.  He turned down a Doctor Who role before the show was popular.  Much like half of the actors they wanted to cast.

I'm glad Capaldi turned it down because it would mean that RTD would have gone straight onto Eccleston and deprived us of what is now pretty much one of the greatest Doctors ever. McGann has stated that he was never asked in 2005 to return, it was always RTD's plan to relaunch with a Ninth Doctor rather than Eighth.

Eric Roberts is a multi award nominated actor Oscar, multiple Golden Globe awards for acting. Maybe not cast or written properly for the part of the Master but then again the 1996 Dr. Who USA pilot was not well conceived story.

if he was the 8th Doctor then Moffat really wouldn't have needed to invent the War doctor for the 50th.

Then again McGanns classic, heroic version was a good follow up from the 7th Doctor.

This, boys and girls, is why you should never underestimate your own abilities. :P

i am very happy he did so. I am a big fan of his other work and think it is awesome that he was in a band with Craig Ferguson back in the day. I must say that initially i was highly skeptical of his casting as The Doctor being a good fit, but he is a great fit and he is perhaps almost as huge a fan of the program and his take on The Doctor shows that he cares about the character as a whole.

Kinda funny how everyone seems to presume he would have absolutely gotten the part...:-) Not necessarily. It still might have gone to McGann (and anyway, as much as I enjoy Capaldi, I don't think he would have been better).
