The Air Force and navy of France are the most powerful in western Europe. The British have been reducing their weapons purchases since the nineties. They are reducing their frigate order in favour of cheap ASW frigates that aren't nearly as capable as German corvettes. Their destroyers are horizon class frigates with an extended range, they are finally adding air defense capabilities to get at least that in order. They have reduced the F-35 order and only upgrade their aircraft to the minimum of the needed capabilities. And now they are reducing the ground forces. Usually a conservative government is good for the armed forces but in the UK the opposite seems to be true.

The German armed forces are finally recovering from the DDR equipment replacement and maintenance (the reason for replacement) cost. They are trying to get back in the game and in the early 2000s France started to take over from the British in being the best equipped and trained force in western Europe.

The best armour in western Europe comes from Germany, the best aircraft from France, the best ships from Scandinavia and the Netherlands, with the exception of big vessels (carriers and LHDs) in which France and Spain excell.

France, UK and Germany are on top in that order followed by the Scandinavians.

The French are prolly the biggest but idk if they're as professional as GB's army or navy are but Frances navy in frigates and surface combatants are better although the U.K's destroyers are on pat with any of Frances the new type 26 and type 31's will get the U.K back somewhere it needs to be and traditionally they always had a small army Germany is a mess and Poland will become a big player in the next 10yrs if Germany do not sort themselves out Poland will take there place if they haven't already Italy are strong in most but are small.

Defense potential has to to inl;cude the geopolitical situation and economic strength in addition to military strength. In theory, Germany, with its economy, population and industrial capacity could have the most powerful military. However, it hs not funded it military and it industry is lacking in certain military industries. However, its eastern borders are an open plain with very little natural defensive features.

The UK has a very potent, but small, expeditionaly force. Of course, it is an island and that makes it easier to defend.

France probably has the best balance at the present. The plain that is suited for an invasion narrows near the French and German border, making it less vulnerable than Germany. France is one of two European countries that can make their own fighter jets and tanks with their indigenous industries. The other is UK. Even Sweden uses American jet engines.

In order: Italy, France, UK, Germany, Spain.

I'm not here to critise or mock other country's armed forces. I've worked with French, German, Dutch Americans, Australians, Canadians etc. Some more than others. Some I rate eg Australians, Canadians, and the Dutch. The Aussies and Canadians are similar to us, in proffessionslism, training, ethos, SOP etc. The rest are OK but not in the same league. But your only as good as your enemy is bad. British army is maybe small. But we have always punched above our weight. Most professional, battle hardened infantry in Europe, and probably the world. The RAF is very well trained and equipped. Highly respected around the world, as is the Royal navy. The French are our main rivals. And always have been. Sure they have won battles against us. But it's winning wars that count. We are a martial race Saxons, celts vikings etc it's in our DNA. If it came to a straight up punch up between us and the French. Yeah! I fancy our chances against them. 😁 The Germans are out of it I'm afraid. A shadow of what they used to be. Anyway, it's not the UK you need to worry about.
