No, we don’t need to study the effect of Trumpism on these people. It’s very simple, the how and why they delude themselves into thinking he shares their particular values. It’s because he does share one or two of their values, and they are so desperate to see those particular policies enacted, that they willfully delude themselves into thinking he will share their other values. For a lot of them, being isolationist and anti-war may be important, but being a racist, sexist pig is infinitely more important. So they’ll overlook it when he doesn’t align with their beliefs because deep down, they know what their priorities are.
