These are plea deals. my grandmother was murdered by a neighbor pretending to want to play billiards with my grandfather who was at his part time job in a photo lab. She was stabbed 11 times. Her killer told her he was going to have to kill her. He stole her wedding ring, a VCR and a jar of quarters. She was 72 years young. My grandfather found her with a pillowcase over her head in the floor in her bedroom. The killer’s mother turned him in, turns out they were both meth addicts. My family wanted the death penalty in Florida, but the DA told them that my grandfather would never live to see this man executed. He told my dad and his brothers that they probably wouldn’t live to see it either. So they gave him a plea deal. Tell us what you did, plead guilty and get life with no parole. So now he has a television, access to books, an hour a day outside, three squares a day, and is kept in isolation from the rest of the prisoners because killing old people is very unpopular behind bars. It makes me sick to think that he is still alive, but this is our justice system. And I understand why the DA did what he did. He was right, my grandfather would never have had closure. My grandfather passed away a broken man who never recovered.
