Interesting how they put up lighthouses in areas prone to wrecks, which is often the same reason we install new traffic lights.

This was one of the best-written episodes I've watched. That ending was just beautiful! As an aside, any of us who are old enough to have had a pager/beeper IMMEDIATELY knew what "1-4-3" meant, before it was even said, LOL!!

Growing up in south Louisiana we didn't have lighthouses but my grandmother always collected lighthouse themed knick knacks. So now i have them all years later and i love lighthouses just as much. I've always wanted to own one.

This was such a poetic episode of Modern Marvels, it caught me by surprise tbh

Never told what turned the lense around in the ones before electricity.All this time and left out an important thing, POOR REPORTING.

A wonderful program showcasing America's neglected lighthouses. Automation has threatened to erase our precious history. Through restoration projects funded by the National Lighthouse Association and volunteers and fundraising our history is being preserved for future generations.

They must have not rotated till electric was used. Unless they had so sort of heat engine.

I miss the old History Channel that had fantastic programming like this! Everything on the History Channel these days is trash.

I drove a 1969 VW bus down highway 1 from Cape flattery Washington to San Diego California we stopped at every light station along the way.

Like the lighthouses, Modern Marvels have been a lighthouse to education. Showing the history and development of nearly everything. They may be replaced by other things but their interesting and informative format will never go out of style. I only wish they would keep producing and updating them for new generations.

Back when the History channel posted actual history...

Imagine a Light house that has a 1 & 1 characteristic, however, the color of light can be changed out depending on weather conditions. Yellow could be calm, Red could be a gale/storm, and white can be fog/whiteout/ Red & White could be a Hurricane, and so on and so forth.

What an excellent and informative episode, especially for an up and coming lighthouse enthusiast like me. This was a joy to watch, although not one lighthouse from my state, NJ, was showcased. There's much history to NJ's east coast lighthouses i.e. Barnegat Lighthouse, Navesink Twin Lights, Absecon Lighthouse (Atlantic City) and the Cape May Lighthouse. I'm happy this showed the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; that truly was a "modern marvel" of it's own.
