The name comes from a gym teacher they had in high school who suspended them for violating dress code by having their hair too long. Leonard Skinner They named the group after him and changed the spelling to avoid a lawsuit

I did NOT expect to find Skynyrd on your channel! Such a fantastic band. (Aside: I notice you have the band name spelled wrong in your title...should be Lynyrd Skynyrd)

¨Oh yes, I wanna yes I ´am¨ says the live version just before the guitar solo...one of their great songs, it's a shame they didn't remaster it when they released the CD...I have the original vinyl and the CD and some guitars are missing...the composer and lead guitar on this song was Gary Robert Rossington...although in some live versions the solo was played by Larkin Allen Collins Jr...because Gary had a car accident due to alcohol and drugs, which left him disabled for a while..Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote the song «That Smell» based on the car accident and the influence of the effects of drugs and alcohol on Rossington. "Tuesday's Gone" or the slide of "Free Bird" are, along with "Simple Man", some of the songs in which Gary is great...it's a shame that the versions of Free Bird I've heard live or in the studio on CD can't be compared to the vinyl...a guitar is missing...personally, this song makes me think of my grandmother, may she rest in peace...yes, grandma, I'll try.
Another curious fact is that a few months before releasing this LP (their first) they did it with another name... several in fact, but without success... and they decided to change the name to that of a gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Leonard Skinner was a basketball coach who several members of the band had as a teacher and who they called Lynyrd Skynyrd in a mocking tone... Leonard Skinner... doesn't he sound familiar to you from The Simpsons?

Leonard Skinner was their teacher in high school. They didn’t much care for him as he was pretty strict. He thought they were a bunch of long hairs. They changed the spelling of his name for the band! He was interviewed about it before he died and he thought it was pretty cool.

My brother Mike was this simple man (& looked like a ZZTop member).... hardworking, loved his wife & kids, read and lived as Jesus taught us, all of this despite being deaf ..... he was loved so much by all of us .... but at a time he was going through personal struggles, none of us knew he was fighting hard but losing the battle... I had this played at his funeral and used the lyrics as part of my goodbye to him....

Yes you said the name right lol, spelled kinda of crazy but for a legal reason... This group was founded in Jacksonville Florida and these guys went to high school there and their teacher/coach give them a hard time about the dress code and long hair so they named the band after this coach but spelled it crazy so he couldn't stop them legally. Later they became friends and the coach helped they design and release one of their albums. These guys were in a plane crash in Oct of 77 and killed Ronnie Van Zant the lead singer and his brother now sings lead with the band. One of the Guitarist Steve Gaines was also killed and his sister back up singer Cassie Gaines also died. The rest of the group was injured very bad but reformed the group in the late 80s with Johnny Van Zant as lead singer. I saw them three times before the plane crash and I seen them in 2024 as they were touring with ZZ Top. The modern band only plays the original hits at their concerts. I can't name all of them but most people have heard Sweet home alabama, Free bird, Tuesday gone, give me three steps, and Simple man. One of my favorites is Call me the Breeze. My friend you just found the greatest southern rock group of all time. Just remember to react to songs recorded before 77 unless you want to react to the modern band.
