This is where this movie went south. Shinji is horribly depressed then sees one of his best friends melt for no reason and decides, oh I'm okay now, time to beat up my dad and go date some random ass girl that I've barely ever talked to. Trash ending to a great series

Pra quem não entendeu o motivo dela morrer assim, é muito simples. Diferentemente da Série Shikinami, os produtos do Série Ayanami são clones da Yui com células tronco e a alma de Lilith. São corpos de duas espécies diferentes, uma coisa instável. A única coisa que os mantinham existindo eram os banhos de LCL que eles tinham na NERV. Sem o contato com o LCL, uma Rei não dura muito tempo. Depois do Quarto Impacto, a Senhorita Sósia nunca mais pilotou um EVA ou sequer teve qualquer outro tipo de contato com o LCL. Ela durou alguns meses, mas não muito.

A clone human has finally became a real human through the life in the village. I think this can be regarded as a happy ending for her.

Can’t say I didn’t see something like this coming. Anno famously despises Rei and all her fans for not viewing her as creepy like he does.

This and how little he gave to Rei II in this film solidifies his hatred for her.

When i first seen this scene i felt shock. Why she cannot stay with Sindzi? In original serial and all story in rebuilds i really think that she will be sth like waif for him, but every time when she "fell good", she die or transform in vinegar. Supercool.

What gets me about this scene is how Shinji calls her "Ayanami" as she dies and he dives for her suit. Up until this point he had conceded that she was not the Rei that he knew or thought he saved at the end of the second film, but here he had finally accepted her as Rei Ayanami right after it was too late.

She was a clone fueled by LCL fluid. That's why all of the Ayanami series Reis each spent a very extensive amounts of time submerged inside pure LCL tanks, it was what kept them alive besides the medicine they occasionally consumed.
LCL fluid, not necessarily having to be in an EVA's pilot capsule to be submerged, she had her dedicated LCL tank in NERV just for a Rei or many at a time, and she simply access to it at any time at Nerv if she wasn't doing anything related to orders. Even every plugsuit that a Rei had, their wrists had an LCL level warning indicator dedicated for Rei... this was the first time we got to see it actually warn her about the lack of LCL levels that kept her form stable.
The lack of LCL ruined her anatomy and cells, and being mostly composed of LCL herself, she turned momentarily into a puddle of blood, then all of that blood and calcium liquefied bones back to LCL.
Her entire existence was tied to depending on LCL exposure in order to keep existing. A miserable existence even for someone that was finally getting the chance to live life as a human, to feel a little bit of autonomy, to be part of something, to feel happy or any form of comfort. In the Rebuild series, apparently... the first Rei we see is apparently the Ayanami 06, but as classified as her existence is, she was still branded the "First Child" and given the 00 number as to be the first, and that one also was finally feeling as tiny feeling of humanity or desire to interact, to understand her reality a little... and she had little to nothing to treasure. On the Neon series, the one we see first, in this world, that is the Ayanami 02 clone, we already saw what happened to the first clone that was made to be child-like... though this Ayanami seemed to actually had more than autonomy... she was raised and cared for enough to carry an actual smile or smug attitude or politeness but she was still a child and didn't fully understand "manners"... Ayanami 02 was also... finally feeling something and a most tragic last moments of existence she clinging onto life not wanting to let go after having taken a regrettable decision, hell.. she even fused with her Eva to absolute synchronization prior to getting nuked from within, then later Ayanami 03 whom we see literally reset the planet... felt somewhat someone autonomy, even cared for someone else enough to give said person the choice for a different new world over the one that was erased, like clearing up with an eraser a paper page that was written with pencil alone by others, she erased that page, and let Shinji essentially let him choose what would be drawn and written to that page in a metaphorical manner, first being her suggestion then the choice she allowed him to have.
These few of the Ayanami series were the only ones that were finally achieving humanity that was neglected to them, they were finally getting a "Soul"... well... Only Ayanami 02 from Neon and the final last Rei we see in 3.0+1 that was inside the Eva 01...those were the only ones that got to have a soul enough to defend their existence enough to want to keep it, specially 02... she regretted it, seemingly after seeing her act the way she did on her lasts seconds alive
