I'm not fully convinced Jon isn't down to fight Tom. Part of it may be that he probably wants the biggest payday in UFC history and he has an argument for that. For years he's watched fighters who are a fraction as talented and an even smaller fraction as meaningful to the history of the sport (O'Malley, for example) make the kind of money he was getting after already cementing himself as one of the greatest ever. He was there before, and is still here after the entire careers of fighters like Conor. At the end of the day, he's a prizefighter and one of the greatest in the history of all combat sports, he wants a prize that befits that. I get fhat Weasel basically hates Jon these days but the man has nothing to prove and has put the UFC in a relatively powerless position.

Jones's tactic is simple, ask for an absurd amount knowing that the company will say no, and don't face the biggest challenge of the moment. That's why Jones is not the greatest, he avoids the biggest challenges of the moment, he has been doing this since 2016.

Jones has 16 title victories, more than half of these victories were in fights without dominance (Gus, Santos and Reyes) Athletes technically limited or from the lower division (Quinton, Ovince, Gane, Smith, Sonnen and Belfort), or athletes outside the peak(Gus 2 and Miocic). This "title wins" argument is vague, you can avoid the number 1 challenger and choose a style that matches yours and that's it, you defended your belt and the record was increased artificially , but history is not about that.

Problem with Tom is that he's also not very active. He only fought once last year and his record is not that good.

I’m surprised Dana hasn’t just given an ultimatum already. Fight Aspinall for x amount or vacate and retire. Simple. I think Dana is holding out thinking Jones is is that investment share that might have a payday. It might but it’s also a huge risk. First of all defend or vacate. Second of all Jones priced himself out of the fight with Ngannou, I believe in my soul it was never about the money, he didn't want to fight Ngannou. It irritates me how Dana White flipped the narrative around to say Ngannou was afraid to fight Jones. Dude, Tom just got the belt too, not long enough to fight Jon Jones to prove himself. I think Jones deserves the respect as his aging and if he does retire then let him be and keep his legacy. If I was Jones I would think about it carefully knowing that I’m older it’s a big risk for his legacy.
