Apple's USB-C Trickery: iPhone 15 Pro's Hidden Cable Controversy?

I'm pretty okay with it, USB 3.1 2x2 Gen 2 or whatever it is called, as well as Thunderbolt cables, are quite a bit larger and less flexible. They use a lot more copper too. For a feature that probably 1% of iPhone users will use, I think that's a pretty solid trade off. I think the bigger problem is that Apple doesn't have anything between these charging cables and their Thunderbolt cables.

I just received my iPhone 15 Pro Max and I have OWC 100W/40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 cable connected to Mac Mini M2. The backup restore speed is 40Mb/s. That is a shame, it's USB2.0 speed. Nevertheless, after the initial setup, I will try other cables.

just use the Belkin thunderbolt 4 active cable.

Hey, what about a good brick for the wall. I only have the old 20watt one that was suggested from able acouple years ago. Anyone know some of the best bricks out there? Not super worried about the price, just something that looks somewhat nice and that will be able to utilize the speed of the Mophie 3.1 USB-C Cable and allow it to do what it was meant to!

Man I can’t find the a black Mophie Cable for the life of me. Already ordered the white one but it’s gonna be clean all of maybe 12 hours. Probably less depending when it arrives 😂

They put a charge cable in the box not a data transfer cable as they don't really need to put that in there...

Honestly, the majority of using don't need USB 3 as they are not going to use the phone for data transfer, only for charging. So it makes sense, for the niche case of needing USB 3 data transfer, that you'll need to buy a cable that can provide that capability.

so the thunderbolt cable he referenced is an older displayport thunderbolt cable the cheapest cable is the thunderbolt 4 cable and even right now as i do a data transfer from my laptop it's not going very fast..

I believe it wasn't necessary for the cable to be included in the box as it's not the standard practice. However, it would have been a thoughtful addition. At the very least, they should offer a small grey or black cable with USB 3.0 to distinguish it from the white USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt.

I bet 9/10 times I could pick out a USB3 vs 2. They are way thicker and less flexible. I think Apple did the right thing, very few will need their charger cables for data transfer. I bet most would rather have a slim cable they can easily stuff in their pocket if need be. If you are a pro, you know what you need to buy and go get it.

It's because it was EU regulations that forced Apple to switch to type C's, so it's not any upgrade per se. And people fail to realise not all type C's are the same. And I find it kind of stupid that EU would force this regulation because what if a company wanted to create a better type of cable? oh it would be illegal to do so.

It’s kind of f*cked up - Apple puts in usb-c bc if EU rules on standard chargers. However my Apple IPhone 15 Pro doesn’t work with ANY USB-c except for their freaking cords. I AM DONE WITH THE SKETCHY DEALINGS OF THIS COMPANY.

It's the same with Android phones, the charge cable in the box is usually only USB 2. Apple are not doing anything different here.

Sounds like Apple being Apple and treating their customers like suckers. They have been stripping their phones of features and accesories for years while bumping up the prices at the same time. The worst part is that they've paved the way for other companies to do the same. They only added USB C because the EU forced them to. I don't like that Now we have to rely on government making sure they dont rip us off. We should protest by not supporting them with our cash and just hold off upgrading and/or buying used until they start treating they customers with respect again.

Although I agree it would be nice if Apple included USB 3 cables, how often do you actually transfer data off of your phone via USB? I’ve had both Apple and Samsung flagships for work for the last decade and the only time I ever used USB was to root or jailbreak them. All my photos and videos are cloud synced before I even get home. The number of people that have a use case for USB3.2 is just so small, and the fraction of those that don’t already have a USB 3.2 cable must be in the hundreds lol so I really don’t think it’s necessary

Not economical to include that when the majority of users wouldn’t make use of it or know the difference even.

An Oscilloscope would do you wonders for vids like this. You can be absolutely sure that their are no changing variables, other than the cables.

Most people would only care about charge speeds, not data speeds, so why not just put in whatever keeps cost down. I do like the braided usb which at least looks premium.

Actually it says on apples website the 29$ 2m one is also usb 2.0. You have to get the thunderbolt 4 cable for 3.0

Ok, so now we need the EU to make companies stop fabricating usb2 cables … problem solved (just need to wait 5 more years 😑)
