People forget that the Kennedy Campaign spied on and sabatoged the Nixon Campaign in 1960. It was never proven whether JFK was aware of the shenanigans or it was orchestrated by his father's fixers - the result was the loss of the Presidency in 1960.

Nixon's handlers refused to suffer the fate of '68 in 1972 given the anti-war mentality of the country and therefore instituted the spying campaign (which went back to FDR and was prevalent under Hoover's FBI on all campaigns) to ensure re-election.

Watergate was nothing new and was driven by the anti-Nixon sentiment in Congress and the press due to his fervent anti-communist stance and his participation in the McCarthy hearings, the conviction of the Rosenberg's, and the push to end the supremely lucrative war in Vietnam.

The recent revelations of the National Security State's involvement in internal politics confirms the involvement of the the 'deep state,' 'shadow government,' and the 'military-industrial complex' in the manipulation of the electorate and the destruction of a Presidency if you run afoul of their approval i.e. Kenndey reducing Cold War tensions, Nixon opening China and exiting Vietnam, and Trump's 'America First' policies ... ...

The event of televised debates really stirred the dynamics of perception.
People agreed more with what Nixon said, but they preferred Kennedy's looks when he said something himself.
We should never underestimate how dangerous this can be. In the case of Kennedy, yes, it worked since Kennedy was, perhaps, the better choice.

Focusing on the present time, would Donald Trump ever be elected if his debates and speeches were not televised, but instead broadcasted on the radio? I don't think he would.

It is up to us to always remain careful in judgment and skeptical in opinion.
