Former TurboTax employee speaks out after customers owe big money following CRA audits

Why is the CRA charging people interest on an honest error on their part? Where is the moral compass to do the right thing and remove the interest? Why isn’t the CRA investigating Turbo Tax?

Two coverages I wathced on this and none of them make it clear if it is a mistake from the user missunderstanding that they were in fact asking for a credit they were not elligible OR if there was indeed a programmation mistake with Turbo tax. It is like they didn't bother investigate a bit before covering. I use Turbo tax and I am aware that it is "a SOFTWARE". It is not an AI that will ask you 10 000 questions. ou have a responsibility to make sure you answer correctly to questions and verify if indeed you are elligible for a credit. The first times I used it I had to make reaserch for terminology and double check if a credit was applying to my situation. If I would get 2000$ of tax return more than the previous year it would for sure raise a red flag. Would not even be surprised thatthese people had doubt but still went forward crossing fingers CRA would not notice and that if they would they'll just dump reponsibility on the software.

Don't buy American products when there are Canadian alternatives. Especially when the American one is more expensive.

Canadian customers should join together and sue Intuit.

Turbo tax and the government should be on the hook for this its thier program and for what people pay for it it should be bug free

If your family income is $150k and you get a $20k refund, then some thing is wrong. There is no way you should get that kind of refund.

File with a professional and stop trying to do itself this is what happens.

Sounds like it's more efficient and safer to go to a tax expert. May cost like $200 but it gets it right the 1st time

You can say you put your honest data but just like when writing a school paper, you are prone to accidentally entering something incorrectly or misspelling a word on your first time around. And you can still go on to submit the paper riddled with errors. I have seen coverages of this story and heard that there are cases where people failed to allow Turbo Tax software to ‘review’ and double check their numbers to make sure it looks good.

Plus you also have to make sure you are giving everything that you need to report. Software or accountant, they will work with what YOU give it so if you ‘forgot’ to hand in or enter 2-3 important documents to your accountant while doing your 2021 taxes, do not go blaming them when they calculate based off an incomplete picture.

I'm American (elbows up, Canada!) and I used TurboTax April 15th. They told me I owed $1200 instead of the $800+ refund I usually get. I called the IRS and the guy told me TurboTax was screwing things up for lots of people and I should try a different site. I tried taxfreeusa and another one (accidentally) and they agreed on the same much more reasonable answer. I don't know if this is related to the Canadian problem. Elbows up, we need good neighbors, not subjects.

I hated Turbo tax. I went to H and R Block. A piece of mind.

Where the hell is the government (CRA) review of the tax returns? The claim is that the software used only the lower income earner to apply for the rebate, instead of the combined income. Is there nobody at the CRA that would see this and adjust the claim before it's processed? My returns are adjusted all the time, usually to disqualify a deduction or rebate, long before I see any money. And is there not a certification process for the software? It seems like there are at least two levels of QA that have failed, company and government, to get this faulty software in the hands of the public.

I used TurboTax & H&R Block software to compare if the end result was the same. I ended up with the same result owing $6 🤣

They ask you to pay within 2 weeks or pay interest but when they owe you, you have to wait for ever.

You shouldn't claim a benefit you're not entitled to and you shouldn't file your own taxes if you don't know the basics. Anyone can claim all sorts of tax benefits with this sort of software, but the onus is on the filer to be diligent. They are lucky they didnt get penalized

Lesson here is if you cheat on your tax return, there is a very high probability you will get caught. Especially given the advancements in technology and the fact current liberal government hired 1000s of new CRA employees.

I realize there was something wrong with the software last year when I did two of my children’s taxes who worked and went to school. There was a special credit they could get because they worked but didn’t make a lot of income, but there was no notes saying that you could not get that credit if you went to school. I even entered their school information so the software knew they went to school and it didn’t flag it as an error and it should have.

These people don’t look stupid. They have obviously been doing taxes year after year. There’s no way they couldn’t have had a gut feeling that something didn’t add up. When you know you know. I know this kind of thing has happened to myself and I investigated to ensure there wasn’t some kind of glitch cuz I knew based on my knowledge and experience that the outcome just didn’t feel right.And yes my gut feeling was correct.People need to be pro-active, take charge and be responsible.Blaming others will not get you anywhere.

They put in the wrong info too bad. Now audit everybody who could have claimed that tax credit falsely.

The fact is sometimes Turbotax wording is ambiguous. I had a problem years ago due a definition of "real property" that was not worded correctly on TT which I had to hire a lawyer to sort out. I though real property was real estate. Perhaps these peoples issues is like mine. I do not think these people should be held responsible for the interest charges, which can be exorbitant, if that is the case.

If TurboTax software isn't accurate, than the CRA should catch it and refund people. To me this look like rich people taking advantage of government programs that they don't actually qualify for. You can't stand in front of a house worth a million dollars and tell me you qualify for the baby bonus.

Torbo tax is a cheat. They say seniors with just their pension t4a and t4a os and company pension t4a is free yet the tried to cheat you and charge 30 .0 0 plus tax to use their soft ware. 😢

Exact same thing happened in USA - a TurboTax "miscalculation" which was told to me by an IRS agent who said calls were pouring in with the same issue. But IRS says we owe the $ and are racking up penalties while we're trying to resolve... TurboTax is 100% responsible and should honor their "guarantee", especially since we pay the highest amount for their services and have been loyal customers and used them exclusively for the last 15 years.
